Hello Guides!

Firstly, for those who failed the pineapple jam/hemming or both, please redo and bring your completed products to school next Monday, 13th February 2012. Hand in to Vivian Ma'am before school assembly in the parade square by 7.15am.

Secondly, remember to label jam bottle and hemming cloth with your full name and school name, and also remember to put your hemming cloth into zip-lock bags.

Lastly, Sec 3s and 4s please put in your best effort into doing this badge as it is an important criteria for obtaining the President's Guides Award (PGA). So Jia you! :)

1. SCRAPBOOKING COMPETITION

- A creative work of putting together a scrapbook page which captures the WTD theme, “Together We Can Save Our Planet”. The dimension of the scrapbook page is 30cm by 30cm.

- Scrapbook pages in other dimensions will be disqualified.

- The name of the Coy/Pack and School must be clearly indicated on the top left hand corner of the back of the scrapbook page.

5. INTER-UNIT PERCUSSION COMPETITION 2012

-A creative work performed using everyday objects as percussions (the object should exclude drums and other percussion musical instruments). The work should capture the WTD theme, “Together We Can Save Our Planet”. Duration of the performance should be between 3 and 5 minutes.

-Videos in wmv format and a brief description of the percussion performance are to be submitted to Clara by 16^th Jan at claraboh96@gmail.com ( If the video is too big, save it into a CD)

Annual Hike Reflection 2011

Bernie, Sec 1, Ixora Patrol.

Annual hike this year was indeed a memorable one as I learnt many things from there. Although we were all very very exhausted during the hike, but we persevered till the end and did not give up easily. Our efforts paid off when our combined patrol got second. There was a sense of achievement and satisfaction among everyone as we had worked very hard for the tiring hike. We all supported and encouraged each other during the hike, which was very touching. We also bonded a lot with one another during the hike. Furthermore, we learnt how to use just a map and compass to find our way around Bishan. However, I think that we Sec1s should not depend too much on our seniors and we should help them instead by planning the routes to take or leading the way using the compass. By doing this, we can improve on our orienteering skills. Also, we have to be confident of ourselves so that we would be sure which route to take and not end up getting lost. Overall, this annual hike was a tiring but fulfilling one(:

Yi Hui, Sec 2, Orchid Patrol.

This year, we had our annual hike held around the Bishan area and without scouts. However, it didn’t make any difference or create any difficulties as we had our sister Guides with us to support one another along the way. My combined patrol was Orchid and Kingfisher, which we named the KingChid, and our hiking route was around Bishan and Ang Mo Kio. At the start, we found our destinations successfully by applying our orienteering skills and with the help of the map and the compass given. During the hike, some of us were leading the group while some were behind cheering on those who had any injuries or were not feeling well. Things were going quite smoothly until we plotted the wrong spot and headed towards the wrong destination which was in the opposite direction of the actual place we were suppose to go, and thus wasted a lot of time and energy. In the end, we were behind time and had to take a bus back to the Guides House to report. Although we were quite disappointed that we were the last patrol to arrive and that we didn’t complete the hike totally by ourselves, we knew we had did our best and had endured through the hike with everyone supporting one another throughout, which I think was also very important. Any patrol could have been the first to finish the hike, but without any teamwork or members caring for one another, the hike will not be as meaningful too. Although we were the last patrol to reach, the other fellow Guides mates cheered for us when we finally arrived at the Guides House, and I thought that was really encouraging. The sec3 ma’ams also gave every patrol drinks and chips as a reward for the great effort we have put in for this hike. Thus I would like to thank the Guiders, Ma’ams and all the guides for everything they had done today, and good job Kingchid!

Annual Camp 2011

Ngo Xing Yi, Sec 1

It was an emotional and memorable experience for us. Even before Annual Camp 2011 started, we were encouraging one another and the sec 2s also shared their experience at Camp Christine with us. Shirlynn ma’am even gave my camp patrol, Jubilee, some helpful tips and advice!

Day 1:
On the first day of camp, we had to fall-in in full guides’ uniform as Ci Fang and Kalista were going to get enrolled. Halfway through the enrolment ceremony, my vision suddenly became blurry and I had difficulty hearing. I remember falling out and going to the steps to rest. Someone helped me there, but I couldn’t make out who it was. I drank some water and soon, my vision recovered and I could hear clearly again. The first thing I saw were the ma’ams worried facial expressions. They attended to me for awhile before going back to continue the enrolment ceremony. However, Ally ma’am stayed behind with me until I was well enough to fall back in. Thank you ma’ams for looking after me.

I enjoyed the night games a lot. There was a variety of games, ranging from Kim’s game to supposedly scary games. There was this game called choose your fate where we had to pair up and draw paper that determined which body part each pair had to place a ping pong ball in between. Adeline and I got the thigh, Bernie and Chi Hui got the forehead while Cai Qin and Joycelina got the cheek. Adeline and I went first. We held each other at the waist and pressed our thighs tightly together. As my track pants were made of polyester, the ping pong ball would shoot out from in between our thighs when we exerted force on it. This happened countless times. However, Vivien ma’am and Jiaying ma’am kept encouraging us and said that we could do it. With their support and those of the other Jubilee members, Adeline and I managed to follow the yellow line with the ping pong ball in between our thighs. The ma’ams at the other night game stations also kept cheering us on. Thank you ma’ams for giving me the motivation to finish the game even though it seemed impossible to do so.

For supper, we were supposed to have biscuits and Milo. The guider saw that we did not have a proper dinner so she cycled down the hill to buy us bread and tuna in the rain. Before she allowed us to eat them, she wanted us to thank our sec 3 ma’ams and the other guiders and also respect them. She also told us that if we wanted to be respected, we have to in turn respect them.

Day 2:
I woke up very early on this day. The weather was very cold and I was shivering in the tent. Then, the sec 2s woke up and began telling my camp patrol that feeling cold was better than feeling hot. They told us that at Camp Christine, it was very muddy and they did not have to zips to zip up the tent. They had to tie up the tent instead. We were considered fortunate. We had morning exercise first. We cheered each other on when they felt tired. We had a lot of fun here and endured through even though we did this on an empty stomach. After this was breakfast. Everyone in my patrol ate their own share of food. However, when I came back from washing the cups and plates, I realized that a sec 2 had eaten 6 eggs! The ma’ams scolded us and told us that we should eat our own food and not push it to somebody else. Fast forward to the part where we had some games. My patrol cheered when we succeeded in completing each game. All in all, we had a lot of fun. Evening came and we had a campfire. Everyone was very enthusiastic. We cheered when our individual patrols went up to perform. The sec 1s batch item was a mime that was going to be used as our entertainer’s badge. We worked really hard for it and I felt delighted when the other guides cheered for us. We also had a mass dance and it was one of the highlights of the campfire.

Gracia Yong, Sec 2

This year’s annual camp was an interesting one and it was different from last year’s. I did not know what to expect from the camp and was a little worried about how it was going to be. We had to prep a lot before the camp, for example, the making of all our identities, flag, planning our food and gadget proposals and the campfire items. Our sec three maams really guided us and helped us with the pre camp prep.

Throughout the whole camp, I believe that we all learnt many new things, experienced many different experiences and tried out things that we never tried before, especially the secondary ones as this was their first annual camp. Being away from home also enabled me to appreciate the care and warmth of my family. However at camp, we bonded as a family as well, grew closer and got to know each other better.

I feel that this year’s camp was tougher in terms of the mental aspect. We had to endure and work together, for example, in meal times when we needed to stuff ourselves and not waste food, to the sets of PT we had to complete. Whenever any of us felt like giving up, our batch or patrol mates would stop and help us and complete the task together as one. Encouragements were always present and it motivated me to strive harder. Camp was also physically draining as well as it trained us to be tougher and increased our endurance level.

All in all, annual camp was a very educational and engaging one. Even with the troubles we went through in camp, I believe that we all did grow closer together and learnt many skills that will be useful in the future.

Also, I would like to thank the Secondary Three maams who also spent so much time and effort for this annual camp to ensure that it would be a successful one for us!

Sim Pei Jun, Sec 2

Throughout the camp, I think that it was not as tiring as what I expected. This year the seniors were not as strict anymore and they did not implement punishment also. We sometimes take for granted the permission for time extension and we did not have a sense of urgency throughout the whole camp. However, I think that many of us have already done our best. The activities that the trekkers had for us, I think that it was very useful as it really bond my whole group closer and also to learn the importance of working together, like cooperating together to achieve something, although it was something small. The camp was very enjoyable throughout and it managed to train my physical strength.

2. Construct a model or sculpture that it feels best represents Total Defence, using recycled materials.

3. Prepare a short presentation to explain the concept/ideas behind it

Reader's badge

Sec 1s have yet to complete some clauses of the reader's badge.

Recap on clause 3 & 4:

3. Read books with different headings (4 out of 6) out of the following:
-Science/nature
-Travel/exploration
-A foreign country
-History
-Biography
-A book of poems
-Introduce & share the books read through presentation or comic strip or story board to the rest of the patrol members. You will have to photocopy the cover page of your chosen books.

4. Read aloud a passage of your own choice from a sacred book. E.g. Bible, Buddhist passages. The passage should be at least a page long (font 12).

NOTE: Testing for Total Defence Bronze Badge will be conducted on Monday ( 21/11/2011) Reader's badge will be conducted on Wednesday ( 23/11/2011)

Sec 2s:

Accident Prevention Badge:

1. There will be a test conducted on monday ( 21/11) on accident prevention. Please study for the test using online resources, books etc.

2. In normal combined patrols, you all have to come up with a skit to present on Wednesday ( 23 /11).

Include the following points:

- Know and where possible, demonstrate how to guard against accidents and when using: gas electrical appliances, kerosene stoves, naked lights, open fires.

- Know at least three different ways of preventing accidents:
- When boating and bathing;
- When using public transport, cars and cycles;
- When with animals;
- In high-rise buildings.

Scrapbook Competition: Annual Hike 2011

There will be a new competition this year known as the Scrapbook competition where the combined patrols will have to take pictures at each station (combined patrols’ members can be included in the picture, showing significant poses or actions) and tell a story which link the pictures of the stations together. They will then have to include these pictures and their stories in their scrapbooks along with their reflections.

Sam and Fiona went to Bishan CC to get the address for their matchmaking date today and they realized they were going to be late!

So they rushed to NYP for their date. Unfortunately when their dates saw them, they fainted!

So they had to send their dates to the hospital and they were now dateless.

Hey Guides! There will be 2 Unit Initiatives carried out on Friday, 28th October 2011 as we have mentioned earlier, namely: Knitting & Face Painting.

For KNITTING:
Objectives:
-Enables Guides to cultivate a hobby which is useful and meaningful
-Develops Guides’ creativity and patience when knitting

Everything will be provided.

After you have finished knitting for e.g a beanie or a scarf, you can even give it to your friends and family as gifts! So, isn't it useful skill to have?? :D

For FACE PAINTING:

Objectives:
-Learn the art of Face Painting
-Develop artistic skills and creativity to express one’s emotions and feelings through face painting

Things to bring:

-Face towel

-Rags

-Flora/Fauna themed design for face

(Designs are based on each patrol's preferences. E.g Dove patrol wants to have a theme on "Birds". Thus the whole patrol will have to come up with different designs based on their theme "Birds". Every person in the patrol is to have 1 different design each.)

Please put your best effort into coming up with the designs as there will be a fashion show after the activity! Be creative and think out of the box!

Design a Logo.

Your Task:
Design a circular logo with 10cm diameter on an A4 paper.
Your Design should include:
1) A Logo that represents AHSGG
2)A Slogan to commemorate AHS 55th Anniversary and 100 years of guiding in Singapore.
{The slogan must not be more than 15 words.}

There is no limitations to the colours you are allowed to use but it would be best to have solid colours (Try not to have shadings.)

The best design is to be printed on a water bottle which will be distributed to the whole company on a later date.

(1) MOON CAKE MAKING

Aim & Objective :
-To provide Guides with the opprtunity to challenge their own limits by making something that they do not see often
-Enables Guides to interact with and appreciate the Chinese culture through the process of making the moon cakes

Aim & Objective :
-Enables Guides to creatively express themselves through folding air

Total Defence Bronze Part 2 hands on activity

Clause 1 Show & Tell ( INDIVIDUAL)

Guides are to bring an item or picture of an item that pertains to an aspect of Total Defence and do a presentation on it. Their presentation should cover the following key points:

§ Which aspect(s) of Total Defence is the item related to? How/ Why?

§ What is the function/purpose of this item?

§ How is it usually used? Where can it usually be found?

§ How can you use this item to enhance our Total Defence capability?

Examples:

Psychological Defence: Recording of the National Anthem, Picture of our National Flower

Social Defence: Items pertaining to the various ethnic groups’ cultures, festivals, costumes, food, etc.

Economic Defence: energy-efficient light bulb

Civil Defence: First Aid Kit

Military Defence : pictures/ articles on keeping fit

Clause 2 Model Building ( COMBINED PATROLS):

1. Bring any five recycled items (e.g., old newspapers/magazines, glue, string, stapler and sticky tape) and any other relavant items.

Salad making Clause 3( NORMAL PATROLS):

1. Per patrol to prepare a salad to represent Total defence.

2. Per patrol's salad should consist of at least 5 types of fruits and vegetables and salad dressing.

3.Per patrol will be given 20 mins to prepare their salad in the canteen

4.To give a short presentation on your salad: Reasons for how it is decorated, colours and shapes and what they represent etc.

NOTE: Clause 3 will be conducted on 7 sept ( wed). Sec 1s to prepare ingredients for salad making (e.g. Fruits, veg and salad dressing) and utensils ( E.g. Knife, chopping board, plate )

Farewell. 15/7/11

Farewell 2011 was a emotional yet wonderful time we spent with our seniors and our Sec 4 Ma’ams. All the programs went smoothly thus making it enjoyable. Thank you Sec 3 Ma’ams!
Seeing the Sec 4 Ma’ams coming back for this farewell everyone worked hard for was so heart-warming. It was a rewarding feeling as I was performing the Dance Level Item, I saw Jiaying Ma’am and other Sec 4 Ma’ams smiling at me.
The whole farewell was a time of intimate fellowship with one another and our patrol. I enjoyed Patrol Interaction the most as I could really feel the love Jiaying and Ruxin Ma’am showered upon us. They bought a $55 cake for us and bought many other meaningful stuffs for us. I was really touched at the short but meaningful notes Valerie and Jiaying Ma’am gave me! They inspired me to strive for the best in Guides and never give up.
Though this may be their farewell, but their love and concern will always live forever in my heart! Thank you Sec 4 Ma’ams for all you’ve done for me! J I wont let you all down!

Grace Tan. Sec 2.
On 15^th July, Friday, a farewell even was organized. Everyone in the current company put up a level performance for the Sec 4 ma’ams. The Sec 2s and I, included, performed a skit/dance together. It was supposed to be a tad funny for the “Beautiful Egyptians” part but I guess we were all a little nervous. In my opinion, the performance was not as coordinated as it was supposed to be. The seniors’ and juniors’ performances were very cute and funny. The break for high-tea and all of the food was very nice. After we returned to the AVT, video was shown to the Sec 4 ma’ams, compiled with all the videos of gratitude for them. I thought the video was very nicely compiled. Then we had the last patrol interaction with the Sec 4 ma’ams and we exchanged gifts with one another. Not many words were said though.

All in all, I thought the farewell event was really well planned and it was a funny yet also a heartfelt one. I will definitely miss my seniors and I am deeply appreciative for what they have done for us.

Enrollment Ceremony 8/7 2011

Rexanne Yap, Dove Patrol.

It was an awesome day today for all the Sec1 guides because we finally get to be enrolled. We have waited long and hard for this moment and we were excited and nervous to undergo this important ceremony.We talked about it with our other batch mates and confided in each other when in doubt. Reciting the Guide’s honor and Promise with fluency was no mean feat but after weeks and weeks of practicing,we got the hang of it.On the day itself, everyone was very tense and in a state of extreme nervousness, but the seniors helped to loosen the tight knot by leading us in some cheers and songs. We paid close attention to the instructions given in order not to make too many mistakes. Although we tried our best to remember, most of us made a few mistakes here and there, but that could not counter our excitement. As we said our Honour and Promise, we were proud to be officially admitted into the international sisterhood of Guides.After the ceremony, everyone was blissfully happy and relieved. Now that we have become official Girl Guides, I hope we will be able to soar greater heights and accomplish the targets set.

On the day of the enrolment, everybody was very excited to be enrolled and nervous because we were afraid that we would forget our Guides Promise and Honor. We were very excited to wear our Girl Guides uniform too! In the full Guides uniform, we felt very proud and I can say, my batch mates and I were very excited. During the enrolment ceremony, everybody endured with each other in the hot sun, feeling happy that our batch mates were getting enrolled and that we would finally be officially in Guides. That day would be a day to remember in our 4 years in Guides and maybe for our whole life! After the ceremony was closed, all of us were over the moon, knowing that we were officially in Girl Guides and that we were real ‘Sisters’! We bonded through ½ of the year, and now, we treat each other like ourselves, respecting each other’s views! So now, being members of Girl Guides, we will go through thick and thin together, help each other up when we are in not the best of moods and strive to be better and better with each passing day!
That day was the most memorable day for us!

-Develop artistic skills and creativity to express one’s emotions and feelings through face painting.
Things to bring: painting materials, water based paint, rags and flora/fauna design per patrol and rags.

Points will be contributed to the Best Patrol Award for the top 3 patrols for nicest face painted!

So remember to put more effort into your designs, DO NOT use "not being good at art" as an excuse, as long as you put your mind to it, you will not fail!!

Unit Initiative: Embroidery

Hello Guides!

This Friday we will be tapping into our motherly instincts by having a unit initiative on EMBROIDERY! For Sec 1s' information, unit initiative (UI) is when we get together to participate in fun-filled activities to strengthen our bond and allow for interaction. We have around 5 UIs a year, and previous ones were, as you all know, kite-flying, origami and many more. Here is a list of things to prepare by this Friday, 25th March.

Things to bring and prepare:

1. A pair of scissors

2. A sewing needle

3. 2B pencil (preferably sharpened kind)

4. $3 to pay for embroidery kit (consists of an embroidery hoop, 10" by 10" cloth, coloured threads)

5. Think of a simple flowery design that you want to sew on your cloth & bring a hardcopy of your design. You can google simple designs to get ideas and inspiration (we know time is a little tight but please put in your best :D)

Attire: PE attire and school skirt (with school shorts underneath)
Equipment list:
- 1 bag with dry kindling, twigs and husk
- one matchbox
- newspapers (sufficient amount, around 2cm-3cm)
-Filled 1.5l bottle (for consumption and cleaning up) and 250ml bottle of water (to pour into mess tin for boiling, can add a little more water just in case)
- Poncho
- Twine & Scissors
- Paper (blank & single-lined, just in case) and stationery
- Digital Watch
Preparation:
Eat a good breakfast :) Drink more water and go to the washroom before 0745. Put on sunscreen to protect your beautiful skin because you will most probably spend a long time outdoors. Stay calm, be composed and do your best! :D

1. show that she can use an axe and saw; know how to look after them.

3. Follow a map through an area unknown to her and make three discoveries to be indicated by the tester.
4. Light a fire out-of-doors and boil 250ml of water in twenty minutes.

For Req 2:
-Emergency Tent Shelter:
1. Spread the ground sheet out flat on ground.
2. Tie twine to all 4 ends of the ground sheet.
3. Use a 36" pole and place it at the tip 45 degrees from each corner of the ground sheet.
4. Mallet a metal peg, facing 45 degrees outwards, at the end of the pole.
5. Repeat for all 4 corners of the ground sheet.
6. Tie the twine to the metal peg using one round and two half hitch knot. Twine should be left loose to allow space for lifting the ground sheet. With practice, you should know how much twine to leave.
7. Insert the 2 gadget poles under neath the ground sheet to hold it up like a tent. The tightness of the ground sheet will allow the poles to stay in place, standing, so no malleting is required.
- Ladder:
1. Items provided: metal pegs, a mallet, bundles of gadget poles and a single piece of rope.
2. Peg two ends of rope to the ground, forming a U shape with the rope.
3. Tie clove hitchs to attach spars/gadget poles to the rope. Align the spars/ladder rungs parallel to ground. Distance between 2 spars should be equal. Standardise and face the 2 loops of the clove hitch on the outside, the intersecting points of a clove hitch should be hidden by the spars.
4. Note: Everything must be tight and neat. Leave a suitable length of spar sticking out to prevent the knots from sliding out.

For Req 3:
- You can read Guides handbook pg 202 - 205, Geog textbook and or search online.
-I'm so sorry i taught you a different method to calculate bearings but just remember that you SHOULD have degree differences in the movable compass housing. That will be your bearings and state direction please.
If you are finding bearing from A to B, align the scale of the base plate to the two points, with the travel arrow pointing to B. (Pretend you are using a ruler)
Orienting arrow should be pointing to B, so turn the compass housing and align the orienting lines to the grid lines on the topographical map. The number on the compass housing would be your bearing.
Note that the bearing is read in a clockwise direction, it need not be the smallest difference between both readings.
- Pacings: 1st pacing - 3 steps, 2nd pacing and onwards - 2 steps each.
- should know the basics like finding true North, plotting a map (shortest route available but the route has to be accessible) and finding Map Reference Number (MRN).
- Notes will be provided~

For Req 4:
- Before turfing (making a pit), layout on a groundsheet: Twigs, husk, kindling, supporting logs, kettle, matches and 250ml of water.
- Newspapers will be used to hold the turfed grass and soil.
- All the above mentioned items have to be laid out nicely next to the area to be turfed.
- Use a changkol and dig a pit that is of dimensions 1 x 1 changkol width.
- DO NOT dig out the soil. Dig them out after you have defined the hole.
- DO NOT kill the grass /dont overturn the soil. slide the changkol under the patch of grass and soil then lift them up and move it under a tree/anywhere suitable.
- Hole should be a square, with (well-)defined box shape, no slopes please.
- Pit is dug with 5 swift moves, 4 to define shape and 1 more to dig out the turfed materials.
- Light the husk first and put into the hole, quickly add bunch of kindling and twigs to keep the fire going. Place supporting logs and kettle with pre-measured 250ml of water.
- Water should boil in less than 10 minutes.

Centenary Celebration Activities 2011 (urgent)

Hi guides!

2011 is the 2nd year that Guides will be carrying out WAGGG's centenary celebrations with 'GROW' as our main theme. Therefore, there will be special activities and courses that will equip you with skills that will be showcased on the 100th day of 2011 celebrations on 9th April. We will be sending a maximum of 5 Guides for each course, and you might even be selected to become performers during the celebrations!

Activities/courses include (open to Sec 2, 3 and 4):
1. Drumming ($60/ 5 sessions)
2. Japanese Dance ($50/ 5 sessions, inclusive of learning how to wear the Yukato/ Kimono)

You are strongly encouraged to participate in these courses as not only will you be equipped with cool new skills, this will also add to our PNA points!!

Hope you've been enjoying your holi-holidays so far! Don't get too stressed over Guides okay!

Anyway, both Sec2s and Sec1s have agreed to do level item for camp. So, in case you'll have forgotten, here are the basic requisites;

(1) For Sec 2, about 5 mins for your item. For Sec 1, your item should be approx 10 minutes.

(2) For Sec 1, your level item MUST be a mime.

East Division Day '10

Hello Guides!

East Division Day is coming yet again! In case the Sec 1s do not know, EDD arrives once every year, and it is the day when all Guides from the east of Singapore schools gather and have fun together. We have various competitions every year and have been winning numerous trophies. Hopefully, we can do the same this year, and more importantly, have fun!

The East Division Day 2010 will be held on 18th September 2010. The details are as follows:

Theme : Igniting the Flame (YOG)
Venue : Bedok View Secondary School
Time : 8.30am - 1.00pm

For dance, healthy snack making, mascot making, gadgets, recycled craft making, poster making and sports jersey design competitions, proposals have to be submitted to Li Fang @ 3L on Wednesday 25/8 at 7.15am. I/Cs to oversee proposal.

Here are the various competitions. Names highlighted in red are I/Cs.

1. Cheerleading Competition (10 Guides)

Sec 1s: Grace, Celine, Jia Xin, Gracia, Chi Hui, Hui Juan, Li Qin
Sec 2s: Natasha, Clara, Lim Min

Duration of Cheer: A maximum of 2 minutes.
Theme for the Cheer: "Igniting the Flame".
Each school can only send in one team to participate.
Each team must consist of a minimum of 5 to a maximum of 10 members.
Guides are not allowed to engage in any dangerous acts or stunts.
All Packs are given a maximum of 30 minutes to compose the Cheers.
The Cheer is to be submitted at the end of the 3o minutes.
No props are allowed.
Time frame: 1 h 30 min

2. Dance Competition (10 Guides)

Sec 3s: Valerie, Yee Kay, Megan, Ru Xin, Tsu Hui, Jia Minn, Jia Wen, Felicia, Denise, Selina
Things to include in proposal: Song titles, duration of dance, costume, budget.

Each team is to choreograph a dance incorporating elements of hip hop. Teams are encouraged to showcase the vibrancy of youths through their dance.
Each school is only allowed to send in 1 team
Each participating team should only comprise of 8 to 10 members.
Duration of dance item should be within 3 to 5 minutes.
Costume should not be revealing.
Participating teams are to bring their own CD with the song clearly indicated. Any remix music must be burned into one CD.

3. Healthy Snack Making Competition (2 guides)

Sec 2s: Jessie, Wen Xuan
Things to include in proposal: 2 ideas for snacks, ingredients/utensils needed, estimated time needed for preparation of snack, budget, receipt, write-up explaining design and relevance to theme.

Each company is only allowed to send one team.
Maximum no. of people in each team: 2
The snack should be relevant to the theme.
These 3 ingredients must be included in the snack: nuts, fruits and raisins.
A write-up of the snack together with the breakdown of budget (include receipts) should be submitted.
Budget for Healthy Snack Making will be capped to $10.
Preparation of ingredients (for e.g, cutting of ingredients, decorations) should be done within the given 1hr 30 mins and NOT pre-prepared before the start of the competition.
Usage of gloves and aprons are compulsory in the preparation of the snack. Gloves and aprons will not be provided.
Time frame: 1 h 30 min

4. Mascot Making Competition (3 guides)

Sec 1s: Yuvonne, Yi Hui
Sec 2s: Fiona
Things to include in proposal: Ideas, materials needed, budget, time taken, short write-up explaining design and relevance to theme.

Each company is only allowed to send one team.
Maximum number of participants per team: 3 girl guides including mascot and presenter.
The design of the mascot should be relevant to the theme, “Igniting The Flame”.
Teams will have to bring their own recyclable/environmental friendly materials (plastic bottles/ cans/ newspaper).
Each team will be given 1 minute to present and explain the relevance of the theme to their item.
The mascot making competition will be judged on congruence with theme, originality and creativity of the design, attractiveness, suitability of materials and oral presentation.
Time frame: 45 min

5. Gadgets (8 Guides)

1st Team

Sec 2s: Shirylnn, Alyssa
Sec 3s: Cui Wen, Li Fang

2nd Team:

Sec 2s: Vivian, Jia Ying
Sec 3s: Angelina, Jia Ying

Things to include in proposal: Ideas for gadgets, no. of poles needed, estimated time needed for completion of gadgets, short write-up describing gadgets, explaining design and relevance to theme.

Each school can send in a maximum of 2 teams.
Each team must comprise of not more than 4 guides.
Each team to create a gadget that can be used for outdoor activity, in line with the theme, “Igniting the flame”.
Each team must provide their own twine, poles and scissors.
The maximum number of poles (both short and long ones) used should not be more than 20.
Failure to comply with the rules and regulations will result in disqualification.
Time frame: 1 h 30 min

6. Recycled Craft Making Competition (4 Guides)

Sec 1s: Pei Yi, Pearlyn
Sec 2s: Ally, Yue Xin
Things to include in proposal: Ideas for trophy, recycled materials used, materials needed, estimated time needed for craft making, short write-up explaining design and relevance to theme.

Each company is allowed to send in ONLY one team
4 members per team
Each team is to design and create a replica of a winning TROPHY
The design of the trophy should reflect the theme “Igniting the Flame”
Each product MUST consist of AT LEAST 3 different type of recycled materials (eg: plastic, paper, aluminum). However, teams are ENCOURAGED to use as many recycled materials as possible
Other materials/decorative items (recycled or non recyclable) (eg; ribbons, poster color, glue, strings) is up to the discretion of team members
The final product MUST be accompanied with a brief 50-words write-up explaining the design and its relevance to the theme
The write-up can be of any form and it must be placed next to the trophy for the judges’ reference
Teams will have to bring their own materials
Time frame: 1 h 30 min

7. Poster Making Competition (1 Guide)

Sec 2: Pei Xuan
Things to include in proposal: Drawing of ideas of poster designs.

Each company may send in only ONE team.
Participants will create a poster according to the theme on an A3 sized drawing block. • Participants must create their poster on the day itself so there should NOT be any markings of design on the drawing block before the competition starts. (The organizers will go round to check before the start of the competition)
Please bring your own materials such as drawing block, colour pencils, crayon or any other colouring materials.
Time frame: 1 h 30 min

8. Sports Jersey Design Competition: Non-winning (3 Guides)

Sec 2s: Hui Ling, Sue Fang, Jeanne
Things to include in proposal: Drawings of ideas of designs, budget.

T-shirt design should be based on the theme, “Igniting the Flame”.
The t-shirt design is meant as a cheerleading uniform.
Each school is only allowed to send in 1 team.
Maximum number of Guides per team: 3.
Teams will have to bring their own design materials.
Each team will also have to bring one plain white t-shirt of any type before the competition e.g. round neck, polo tee, etc.
There should not be any markings of design on the shirt before the competition starts. (The organizers will go round to check before the start of the competition)
Teams need to include the design of the trefoil on the T-shirt.
Design should be limited to the front of the t-shirt only.
Number of colours used on the T-shirt is not restricted.
The t-shirt design will be judged on its relevance to the theme, originality and creativity of the design, practicality to be worn in public and effort. So unleash your creativity!
Since we will be organising this event, we will not be winning this, to show that we put up a good fight.
Time frame: 1 h 30 min

Those not participating will be on rotational shifts with the organising of the sports jersey design competition. Additional details to your proposal are entirely welcomed :D

- Bring an item or picture of an item that pertains to an aspect of Total Defence (military, civil, economic, social, psychological) and do a short presentation on it.
- Your presentation should cover the following key points:
1. Which aspect(s) of Total Defence is the item related to? How? Why?
2. What is the function/purpose and importance of this item?
3. How is it usually used? Where can it usually be found?
4. How can you use this item to enhance understanding of Total Defence?

- Prepare beforehand on what you are going to do.
- Bring salad ingredients (e.g. cabbage, carrots, fruits, sauce, etc), utensils (knife, small chopping board, place to show salad e.g. lunchbox/plate/bowl).
- 20 minutes to prepare your salad in the canteen.
- Short presentation describing your salad: Reasons for its shape/image/colour, what it represents, etc.

Duty Roster for Cookie Sale

Hello Guides,

As you know we are having our Cookie Sale now. Other than taking individual orders, we will also be setting up a booth in the concourse on Monday and Tuesday recesses. Also, before morning assembly, each guide will have to go to their assigned classes to make an announcement to collect cookie orders from that class.

For the morning class announcements, you can take the orders down in your own INDIVIDUAL cookie order form.

For the recess booth duty, there will be a separate form given to you. Please approach Julia for Monday's lower sec recess, Natasha for Tuesday's lower sec Recess and Yee Kay/Megan for upper sec recess for both days to get the order form. Forms have to be returned to them by end of recess.
Also, please carry one table and one bench from the canteen at the start of the first recess and leave it there for the 2nd recess. Play the cookie game while waiting for potential customers.

Hostess Badge
Sec 1s, Lin Min, Hui Ling and Sue Fang.
30th July

1. Entertaining guests at afternoon tea
- In this case, it will be a teacher and a few seniors.
- Bring your own tea set (you can share with your batchmates), table decor, table cloth and INEXPENSIVE snacks (pandan cakes, etc) for 4 people.
- Your table decor has to be accompanied with a theme (flowers/animals/colours, etc). E.g. Theme is flowers, tablecloth can of flower patterns, decorate table with flowers.
- Strike up conversations with your guests and know proper etiquette (pouring of tea, etc).

2. Writing letters
- You are required to write two letters: Invitation to your tea party and refusing an invitation.
- This will be done on the spot while you are waiting for your turn to entertain the guests.
- Letters have to be in formal tone.
- Bring your own papers/cards and writing materials.
- You may want to correspond your letters with your theme. E.g. Theme is flowers, you can decorate your letter with flower patterns.

*Please do not buy tea sets just for this test.
**You may want to search the web for more information on being a good hostess and how to write a proper formal letter, or ask your seniors for more info.

Collectors' Badge
Sec 1s, 2s and 3s.
You are required to do clauses 1 and 2 to acquire this badge.
Done over a period of 6 months - Due January '11

Clause 1:
Show a collection, made over a period of at least six months, of one of the following: stamps, postcards, postmarks, crest or equivalent; the material is to be drawn from many sources as possible.
Discuss with the tester:
1.1 Why she finds this hobby interesting;
1.2 What she has learnt from it;
1.3 How she can develop her interest.

Clause 2:
Pass three of the following clauses:
2.1 Make a scrap-book for a children’s hospital;
2.2 Make a book of pictures, cutting etc; to illustrate World Guiding
(i.e. within and/or outside the Commonwealth);
2.3 (i) Make at least twelve leaf prints; name and mount them; or
- (ii) Make twelve coloured plaster casts of leaves or twigs; or
- (iii) Mount and label a collection of twigs and fruits of at least eight trees, to give to a Company or Pack.
2.4 Make a collection of at least ten objects which would be of interest to a foreign Company or Pack, and descriptive catalogue to accompany it. Pack in a box small enough to be sent aboard by letter post;
2.5 Collect and mount illustrations of six birds that the candidate has seen, together with information concerning each to include:
- (i) A description of the bird; a particular characteristics; where it is likely to be found; and what it feeds on.
- (ii) Its nest and eggs.
Present the collection to the Company library.
2.6 Make a collection of eighteen wild flowers with their leaves; press, mount and name them. Present them alone or another company.
2.7 Take a set of 15 photographs on a subject of her choice.
Note: The collection is to judge on neatness and method in arrangement and on the interest shown in it by the candidate.

Include the following points:

1. Know and where possible, demonstrate how to guard against accidents and when using: gas electrical appliances, kerosene stoves, naked lights, open fires.

2. Know at least three different ways of preventing accidents:
- When boating and bathing;
- When using public transport, cars and cycles;
- When with animals;
- In high-rise buildings.

Hello Guides!

This Friday, the 19^th of March 2010, we Guides at Anglican High will be having a Unit Initiative revolving around clay modeling.

You heard/read right, Clay Modeling! Time to relive the inner child in us, where we long to fiddle with that lump of play dough and turn it into something completely magical and out of this world. (Although we don’t really want to show it)

Hence, for this Friday, you will all be given a free hand at creating anything you wish with nothing but colored clay.

Please bring:

1) Newspapers, in case the table gets smudged with pale pink clay that will dry and look like chewed up gum. Or anything like that.

2) Apron, for those of us who have butter fingers and ALWAYS find a stain or other on your uniform after recess each day.

3) PVA white glue, or Mod Podge; to stick your pieces of clay together. E.g., you can’t have a clay apple with the clay leaf falling off somewhere else.

4) Clay designing materials- IMPORTANT. Chillax, not the expensive kind you have to get at Art Friend. Everyone is required to bring more than TWO recycled articles to mould your clay pieces. In example, toothpicks to make holes in your red clay to make a strawberry; or a metal scrub to make impressions on brown clay to make it look like a succulent beef patty! Creativity is of the essence.

5) Scissors, self explanatory.

6) Rags, to clean up after.

7) $2 to pay for the clay, excess money will go to the company fund.

8) Papers and pen, for a write up on your patrol’s competition entry later on.

9) For those who have: clear nail polish to varnish your completed pieces.

10) EKC – EXTREME KUKU CREATIVITY.

Yes, there will be a patrol competition towards the end of the session where patrols will be given a theme and expected to create a themed display fully out of clay. Pieces will be judged and ranked.

So bring as many recycled materials as you can possibly think of, for the glory of your patrol and be hyped for this Friday’s activity!

PS. There's supposed to be a number margin next to the list of items to bring, but stupid Word can't copy it over from the original document somehow.

Grr.

1. Thinking Day Banner Design Competition!
- Each guide to submit an individual banner proposal by Monday, 18/1/10, by 7.15am. You can find me in 4J classroom.

- Proposals have to be fully outlined and coloured. (I won't reiterate this point again, it should be understood for all proposals)

- Banners should include the images of 5 Girl Guide/Girl Scout members (including Brownies) in uniform, from the 5 Regions of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (Africa, Arab, Asia Pacific, Europe and Western Hemisphere).

- Name of our Coy and School must be clearly indicated on the banner itself. (anywhere you want)

- No specific theme given, but you can think along the lines of what it means to a guide, relevance to Thinking Day, unity, being prepared etc. Things we do like outdoor cooking, gadget tying, campfires etc are some ideas.

- Be creative and think up of catchy & meaningful slogans!
Example>> "Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it a UFO? NO! It's a FLYING PIG IN A PINK TUTU!"

Sec 2s, there are a few changes to the things I told you all, so read carefully to find out what. I apologise for the late post, you can imagine the horror i felt every time the connection fails. Ugh. Sorry guides!

1) TOTAL DEFENCE PROJECTS — FUN WITH RESEARCH (Group Work)
Objective: To encourage pupils to take an active interest in Total Defence and make it a part of their daily lives.

- In groups of 4, research on and present a project on a Total Defence-related topic.
For example,‘Conserving Our Heritage — What makes up our heritage and what can we do to protect and promote it?’(Psychological Defence); ‘National Service — Looking at its history, origins, significance.’(Military Defence).

- The project can be presented in various forms, such as a drama, slide show, mini-exhibition, scrapbook, song/rap/cheer, etc. Each presentation should take about 15-20 min.

- Your presentation should cover the following key points:
a. What have you learnt about this topic and its related aspect(s) of Total Defence?
b. How can we play a part in it?

2) TOTAL DEFENCE MENU OF ACTIVITIES (Individual)
Objective: To get pupils to go hands-on and be involved in Total Defence.

- You will be given a menu of Total Defence activities to choose to participate in, to be completed in 2 weeks (starting 23/11/09). Different activities on the menu, depending on their difficulty level, will have different points pegged to them. You have to obtain a minimum number of 25 points to pass this activity, and cover at least two aspects of Total Defence in your choice of activities.

**- Hence, it will NOT be done on the spot. The form of submission (e.g. via email, snail mail etc since it will be during cca break) will be further elaborated in future posts, so do keep a look-out!

**- After completing your activities, you are to share the learning points/experiences gained.

Hands-on Activity 1- Show & Tell (Individual)
•You are to bring an item, or a picture of an item, that is related to Total Defence (e.g. a first-aid kit or an army beret), and make a 1-min presentation on it.
•Objective: Enhance understanding of each Total Defence aspect and the part that we can play.

Your presentation should cover the following key points:
1.Which aspect(s) of Total Defence is the item related to? How/ Why?
2.What is the function/purpose of this item?
3.How is it usually used? Where can it usually be found?
4.How can you use this item to enhance our Total Defence capability?

Here are some examples below...

Hands-on Activity 2 - 4
•Objective: Show how the five aspects of Total Defence work together to strengthen Singapore's defence.

Hands-on Activity 2- Model Building (Groupwork)
•In groups of 4-5, you are construct a model or sculpture that represents Total Defence, say, by using newspapers and stationery items like string, glue and tape.
•When the models are ready, team members are to present their model and explain the concept/ideas behind it.

Hands-on Activity 3- Together As One Body Machine (Groupwork)
•In groups of 4-5, form a 'machine' per group, using their body movements. For example, if the group is representing a cake-mixer, one pupil can be the whisk, another the mixing bowl, and so on.
•Alternatively, you can also 'invent' a new machine.
•Team members are to present their machine and explain the concept/ideas behind it. (3 min)

Hands-on Activity 4- Salad Making (Groupwork)
•In groups of 4-5, bring five different types of vegetables/fruits that can be made into a salad.
•Using the 'salad' illustration as a guide, you are to think of three other analogies that can be used to illustrate the importance of Total Defence.

Right, so sec 1s do take note and bring all the things you need to prepare for the hands-on activities except show and tell for 20/11 guides activity. Form your own groups beforehand.

To clarify on a few of your doubts on hostess badge:

1) You DO NOT have to bring drinks, we will be using tapwater to pretend that it's coffee/tea, so just bring your cups etc. Sorry for the wrong info given to some of you.

2) Writing materials may include decorative pens, cutouts from printer, stickers etc, anything that you need to write your card and letter.

3) Hostess badge materials means your table cloth, food, cups, cutleries and so on, if you got confused on what that meant.

4) Like I said the activity before camp, you can refer to books on etiquette or go to google and youtube to search for info and videos on table manners and being a good host etc, if you're still at a loss as to what to do.

5) Remember, nothing will be provided for you except the test location, tables and chairs, so bring EVERYTHING you need.

Lastly, take note that those who can't make it will not be able to get the badge, as there will not be a retest.

That's all then, relax and apply what you know, no need to be super formal, you guys can do it! easy peasy :)

Upcoming Hostess Badge for Sec 1s

Hello everyone!
Yup as the title suggests, this post contains all the information you (sec 1s) need to know on what you will have to do to attain the hostess badge - it's the one badge you absolutely can't afford to miss, so read closely!

Purpose of this badge is to show that YOU as a guide can be a qualified good host to others, besides being equipped with skills on table etiquette and such. It's important because you guys will then be able to partake in refreshment duties like the rest of us next year after this, isn't that exciting (think of the good food you'll be able to stuff yourself silly with during clearing up)! :D

Anyway, I apologise for the late post, just got home like not long ago. There are 3 parts in total:

1. Entertain the testers (max 3 guests) at afternoon tea. (5-10min)

*Marks will be awarded as follows:
·whether the menu served is appropriate (Guides just need to bring ONE food item suitable for the theme - afternoon tea)
·entertainment factor of the host - greetings, making the guests feel welcome, able to strike conversation with ease with the guests etc
[decide and tell testers at the start what kind of guests they are: strangers, family, friends etc]
·body language - etiquette in serving the guests, offering food & drinks etc

2. Know, and where possible demonstrate, the chief things to remember when entertaining a guest or guests by laying of table. (5min to prepare)

*Marks will be awarded as follows:
·whether the table is properly laid according to the theme afternoon tea (to serve 2-3 guests)
·Guides need to bring their own table cloth, napkin, cutleries, ONE food item to be served, cups, plates, teapot etc

3. a) Write an invitation card inviting to a tea party (any theme, e.g. formal, informal, children, adults, animals etc)

*Marks will be awarded as follows:
·creativity & attractiveness of card (according to theme)
·content of card is relevant & detailed (time, venue, dress code etc)
·language use is appropriate & relevant to the mode of guests

3. b) Write a letter refusing an invitation (one to be formal).

*Marks will be awarded as follows:
·format of letter
·content of letter is relevant
·appropriate use of language

All these will be done during activities, so please bring only the materials needed and NOT start doing at home beforehand. However, annual camp is just less than 2 days later, so let's focus on the that first, and you can continue the preparations after that. Thanks alot:D

IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTE!

- This is the duty list for Thursday & either Friday (if there is school) or Tuesday. If there are sales on Friday, a new duty list will be put up for Tuesday.

- There will be cookie sales after school as well so please follow the upper secondary recess list after school sales as well.

- Different colored names will mean different duties so take note of your colors.

CARNIVAL PREPARATIONS

Yesterday’s activity was a rather quiet one, partly because there wasn’t any games or PT (or anything which dictated the juniors to scream), and also because many sec 3s went for OBS. How sad. (Just Kidding!)
We had carnival preparation for the entire day so we’d be able to finish everything before Saturday. Activities like Modules were also scrapped to make time for this.. HAHA! Ok anyway.. cutting of badge templates wasn’t very well done (especially the ‘Colours of My Life’ badge). Wow! I feel angry/enraged/livid already. BUT I ALSO FEEL SORRY. HAHA. Ok maybe you’re not supposed to say ‘Haha’ when you’re apologetic. Sorry for not getting the right measurements before we printed the templates. Yay.
Next.. Painting. Now I know what’s the thing called ‘talent’. Some people like Wen Jing can photocopy really well! I seriously don’t see the need for inventions like the scanner and printer or camera or photocopier now. Just kidding! I like to exaggerate a lot.
As far as my dysfunctional brain can properly recall, the banners and posters and mascots were REALLY well done!!! Even though it wasn’t completed in 10 seconds or something, it was still a feat considering the fact that everyone managed to complete the stuff within that one single single single single morning! (Other than minor touch-ups needed here and there)
Before my minuscule brain goes kaput, I shall end off by thanking every one for being socially responsible by not spreading the H1N1 virus!! I wanted to thank every one’s lucky stars but I soon realised we can’t see stars in the day. Heeeeheeeeee.
Oh yes! Before I forget.. I think we should thank MAGGIE for editing and printing the extra 101/102/103 badges (I forgot how many). That probably saved the company from (17 x 1.50) $25.5! YAY HAHA!

Today, we had a few hours of carnival preparations, starting off from the badge-making. Firstly, the juniors were to cut out the badge templates for the ICs to start making the badges. It was pretty amazing that over a hundred badge templates were cut out in a short period of time. Woots!
Next up were the banner, mascot and posters preparations. The sec 1s and 2s were divided into a few groups and each group was given a certain task to work with. The beginning part was sort of disorganized at first, but we still managed to keep to schedule. The banner, which was done by I-can’t-remember-what-patrols, was really really really awesome! Without any supervision, they sketched out the difficult design and did a good job in painting the banner. As for the mascots, they turned out fine (especially the beanie mascot- so cute!) and for the posters, they were well-done. The posters were almost an exact replica of our proposal.
However, the ICs felt that despite the really good quality of the decorations, we still saw some juniors slacking when they could have the initiative to help out their fellow guides. That’s what bonding is all about, yea? Help out each other!
So overall, today’s carnival preparations were successful. Yay!

WEEKIMWEE CHALLENGE AT CAMP CHRISTINE!

On Monday 22nd of June, Mrs Phua, Ms Hafizah, Maggie ma’am, Vivien ma’am, Hwee Fen ma’am, Mandy ma’am, Megan and I had to go to school to prepare for Wee Kim Wee challenge. We had to pack all the ingredients properly, get ready all the equipments required, and prepare the lemon balm drink. After that, we ate our lunch and left school at about 12pm.

The trip to Camp Christine took about an hour. When we reached Camp Christine, we had to wait for South Division (?) to finish before we could start.
At the waiting hall, I was really amazed at the size of the other schools herbs. They were really huge. While waiting, we were playing some games like the 成语game. At about 2.30pm, Megan and I went to a different area to cook while Maggie ma’am and Vivien ma’am went to the main hall to do the menu/informations and the table settings. The cooking and the presentation had to be done in two and a half hours.

Megan and I made some mistakes during the cooking but good thing Mrs Phua was there to remind and tell us our mistakes. Sadly, the end product was not as good as the ones we did during the practice sessions. After cooking and clearing up the place, we quickly rushed to the main hall to help Maggie ma’am and Vivien ma’am. As we did not have enough time to finish the whole menu/ information, we cut short the number of pages and informations we had. At about 5pm, the judging started. We found it weird that the judges did not try the food we cooked. Anyways, after the judging, we packed our stuff and left Camp Christine. Overall, I thought everything was okay and I really hope we would do well.

The team and the teachers met at 9.30 to weight out the ingredients and prepare the equipments. We also made the Lemon Balm Tea then. It was quite delicious with its variety of flavours. It tasted sweet, sour and had a minty flavour. We checked everything to make sure we had the necessary ingredients and equipments. After some mental preparation, we made our way to Camp Christine, the competition site. We waited for awhile before the competition started. I was the substitute chef and was in charged of cooking the chicken wrapped in bacon. It was challenging as it was my first time attempting to cook the product. I felt that I could have done better in terms of time management. I should have ensured that the chicken was fully cooked too. The whole product tasted very delicious. Overall, I was quite satisfied with our end product(:

2ND ACTIVITY 29TH MAY 2009

Cut nails. Tuck in shirt. Clip up hair. Check!

Started off Guides activity with attire check as usual. Was feeling kinda nervous and excited at the same time as we didn’t really know what was in stall for us.
Having grabbed our ponchos and 1.5s, we Sec 2s had our first Physical Training in a long time. I could feel the batch's bond-ness as we shouted and cheered each other on. Although the PT was really tiring, it allowed us to strengthen our bond and endurance, and we all endured through! I felt really accomplished after finishing the 7 sets ;D

Later, we fall-ed in at a classroom and was joined by the Sec 1s. We discussed our patrol farewell gifts for a while and then proceeded to discuss our level item. Hope the Sec 4s will like what we have prepared!

Orchid and Kingfisher then went to the next classroom to paint the carnival mascots! Wohoo! I think the mascot is really cute. Anwyay, we drew and painted according to the proposal and was quite satisfied with our work. Hee ;D

We had a debrief and was dismissed. The ma'ams highlighted that we should be more initiative, have a sense of urgency and most importantly, respectful. I hope we can live up to that standard and put in our best for every activity (:

3RD ACTIVITY, 2ND JUNE 2009

For tuesday, we started off with drills . Drills was somehow disappointing for the sec 1s as some of us had forgotten the commands and ,thus, not performing up to standard. Marching into contingent( I guess its spelled like that) was a big headache for both the sec 3s and us. As some of us was not clear about how we were suppose to march and where we were suppose to march to. Adding to the fact that we were sort of distracted by a flower obstructing our way , which we have to tilt our head while marching in order not to bump into it. A few of us could not hold back our laughter and started giggling among ourselves. After the seniors demonstrated to all of us, how marching into contingent should be done , many times, we managed to improved a little.

After drills, it was preparation for farewell. We split into three groups and started doing what each group was supposed to do. My group was supposed to draw on the white banner and paint it. As time was insufficient, we had to clear up everything, leaving the banner unfinished for the next day. Following that, we prepared our level item. The sec 2s performed first. They had put up a very interesting performance which we all feel that we should take them as our role models and learn from them.

After the usual falling in and attire check, Sec 2s proceeded to church carpark for the first activity----- drills. We did rather well in the beginning but we did not maintain the standard. Punishment of 10 jumping jacks was implemented for every 5 samulas( is that how you spell it) We lost count of the number of samulas that we had done and this was rather disappointing, but we improved on it =) We were to show our Sec 1s how to march into contingent and we succeeded =D
This drill session was to choose Sec 2s into NDP. Although not everyone was selected yet, but I hope that the entire batch would get in.
Jiayou Sec 2s =D

After drills it was modules. First 4 patrols went to 1 Respect (?) classroom for modules. Firstly, we were to design a poster that will remind us of the precautions when boarding a bus or MRT and as a passenger in the car. Then, we were to perform a skid to show the precautions of a pedestrian. Last but not least, we were to answer questions about orienteering, like labelling the parts of a compass, how to find bearing and finding true north. Points were given for correct answers and dove won =D
Compared to the last 4 patrols, our modules were not done well and there is a lot of room for improvement.

After modules, we painted the banner for farewell. The first 3 patrols painted the black banner. I think that everyone tried to help out in some way, but I felt that we should split the work more evenly among ourselves. Patrols were called out one by one to film their video dedicated to the Sec 4s while the rest help out in the banner.

After the painting of the banner, we rehearsed our level item for farewell. This was the first time that we are really rehearsing the level item so I think it is still quite passable. There are still rooms for improvement for our level item and we shall do our best for level item =)

Overall, I think today’s activities were done quite okay. There are areas that we have improved and there are still areas that we could improve on. Therefore, 大家继续再接再厉。 =D

ITS TH JUNE HOLIDAYS *BEAMS*
Equals to no school and more guides! *BEAMS EVEN MORE*

It’s the much awaited June holidays and all of the sec3s were excited as it is our turn to take over Guides activities which are in the morning! (:D)
Well its time for brushing up our juniors’ rusty skills and that’s what today’s activity was about!

First up is…………. Fall in! (As usual) :D we all fall in at 8am bright and sunny and I’m sure the juniors prefer this to normal school days which we have to reach school by 7.25 am! (Gee those extra 30 mins of sleep :] ) It’s a time to check the juniors’ uniform and ours too! FTW to perfect uniform like mine :D Everyone and everybody should strive to achieve perfect uniform standards and minimum punishments so as to optimize our performance in Guides. J

The following is none other than the good old drills! I bet everyone knees and arms are getting rusty thanks to the mid years and drills are a good way to energize them up! Furthermore, the highly anticipated Anglican High National Day Parade is coming up and I’m sure everyone wants to join the contingent. While observing the sec2s drills, they were not up to standard as first as I’m sure they’re not used to do drills for so long but after for a while they got better. The sec2s bangs were not bad and they were quite alert in listening to the ICs command. When they started marching, their arm swings weren’t bad too but it can be improved and their ranks need to be neater. Overall I felt that the sec2 drills were not bad considering the fact that they have not done drills for about two months and if they can improve on their marching they can be perfect for NDP! 加油！ As for the sec1s drills, I did not really observe them but what I heard from the other ICs that they need to improve on forming contingent and be more alert. Work harder sec1s!

The next activity was modules and I was not there too sadly. But it is on orienteering! Orienteering is a very important skill of a guide and everyone should familiarize themselves with the skills of orienteering. Orienteering can be a fun activity if you make effort to learn the skills and in future actual orienteering sessions like annual hike. Modules were as just the usual. So the ICs came up with some amazing ideas and someone injured her leg. Take care of yourself! I heard that the guides were really enthusiastic about the module and make effort to do the posters and some need to put in more effort! Modules are really beneficial to us guides and I hope in the future everyone can make effort to read up more on it and be enthusiastic :D

Finally it was farewell preparations!!!!! Farewell was arriving and I’m sure everyone wants to make that night memorable but first we need to get our stuffs right J first three and last three patrols were involved in the banner painting and the middle two patrols were involved in painting scary BLACK hair for our door gifts! Minli Ma’am and I were in charged of them. The guides we were in charged of were having fun painting them haha! At the same time Yanyan ma’am and cherlin were taking videos of patrols for the farewell patrols video. At the end of the activity the banners were not very well done and the juniors took quite long to clear up. We hope in the future you guys can always put in effort to the items we assigned to you no matter how slack it is :)

FAREWELL

Farewell was a super fun day, we started with the sec 1s and 2s practicing our level performances. The sec 1s practice was quite messy as some of the people acting were just substitutes for the sec 1s who had that role and they had to use the script. Unlike our sec 1 practice, the sec 2s practice was very smooth with no problems halfway. When the sec 1s were acting, I saw that the sec 3 ma’ams were kind of bored with our skit and I was worried that the sec 4s wouldn’t like it.

After practice, we were given 3 minutes to blow up balloons for decoration, then we took our twine and scissors and linked up all the balloons. Jia-En ma’am came to draw the faces on the balloons and along the way, two balloons popped thus, we had to be careful with the balloons even more after that. Then, we followed Charlene ma’am and Ying Yan ma’am to the corridor outside Grotto to get ready to welcome the sec 4 ma’ams! We formed two lines and when the sec 4 ma’ams arrived, we clapped and cheered, then suddenly someone remembered that we needed to run back to the tower hall as soon as possible and we all started running.

It was time for dinner after that, Ixora sat together with Clara i/c (yay!) and Rebecca went to join Flowerpecker. Then, near the end of dinner time, I think two sec 4 ma’ams were doing something when out of the blue, poker cards flew from behind where Ixora was seated, Yun Jin got a shock and yelled. When all the tables were cleaned, we ran back to the tower hall and the sec 1s and 2s had to hide behind the big carpet until the sec 3 ma’ams came out as ghosts to ‘welcome’ the sec 4 ma’ams. As the sec 4 ma’ams came in, two ma’ams discovered us hiding behind the carpet! Soon, the sec 3s (dressed in horror costumes) came out and Min Li ma’am said the cue for us to come out from hiding. As soon as I saw Min Li ma’am’s costume, I laughed a little crazily, her costume was hilarious! She was wearing big glasses and had a cape on her, accompanied with the tone of her voice, I laughed even crazier.

Annabella ma’am, Yan Yan ma’am and a mysterious person performed a dance to the song ‘Nobody’ as the start of our performance for the sec 4s, we were wondering who exactly was the ‘person’ and the next few items were the sec 1 and sec 2s performance and the videos of what we want to tell our dear sec 4 ma’ams. (: Actually, some parts of the sec 1s skit were impromptu, like the part where I knocked out ally/si jin with the microphone. The sec 2 seniors singing was really nice and I hope the sec 4 ma’ams enjoyed the entire performance. :D

After that, we had a ‘walk’ down ‘memory lane’, pictures of the sec 4 ma’ams were shown and I think everyone had a good laugh while watching the video. Then, the teachers i/c gave a speech and at the end, we stacked up the chairs and took down the balloons, we then went to the parade square and sat with our patrols. Everyone lit up their candles and we started talking and giving farewell gifts. I didn’t give my patrol’s sec 4 ma’ams gifts and I felt so guilty and evil about it.

All in all, farewell was really nice, I enjoyed performing for the sec 4 ma’ams and my first experience sitting with my patrol in the night with candlelights was really wonderful.

On Friday, we had farewell! I must admit i was super duper excited before farewell as it was our first time attending it. First we went to the Tower Hall to blow up balloons. We burst about two of them in total. :( After that we have to tie them up together using twine and hang them up on the wall to make them look nice, while we were hanging them up some of the ma'ams hung the banners that we painted the other day.

After that we began to discuss the performance item that we have to do for the sec 4s. And then the sec 1s had a reharsal. At first i thought that we were not really good as the reharsal was sort of in a mess. However at that time, we were missing 7 people and the people who were filling in for them did not know their lines thus the performance was quite messy, but i thought we sang The Climb quite well as we did not use the script. After that the sec 2s had their performance which was very funny. The green wig was very very very funny!!!

Next Charlene ma'am and ying yan ma'am brought us outside the grotto where we lined up in two rows ready to welcome the sec 4s. After they briefed us on what to do they put on white masks and walked away. Soon the sec 4s came and we cheered like crazy for them, after that we went to the towe hall fall in and went to the canteen for dinner.

Before we took food, we had a socalled 'dinnertalk' with the sec 4s. Actually we didnt talk much sunflower patrol was really quiet the sec4s were talking but we only reply what they ask so it was quite awkward. Then it was dinner time!! The sec 4s took food first then sec 2 and 1 then sec 3s. The food was quite nice.

After that we went back to tower hall. At first we hid behind the mats to scare the sec 4s but we got found out because some of the sec 4s came from behind and saw us. After that three sec3s wearing masks danced for a short while and minli ma'am was super funny. After that was the patrol video and the sec 1s turn to perform. I thought we did reasonably well. Then it was the sec 2s turn and the did very well too.

After that we cleared up the place and it was patrol interaction at the parade square.We exchanged presents, and then was dismissal.

Ok, farewell was GREAT! It was practically awesome. I was so proud of all the sec1s and 2s for their dedication and the great performance ;D and was also dam proud of the sec3s for all the hard work and rocking costumes ;D
Ok, so firstly was farewell prep , well, it was preparations ;D so basically. We prepared. And thanks to our outstanding ability to think out of the box, and the wonderful co-operation from the sec3s and juniors, we pulled it off just fine ;D I love the door gift btw. Oh yeahs. FTW! ( in case u might not know, its For The Win ;D )
And next, was the actual farewell ;D what can I say ? it was be-awesome. The seniors came in matching outfits ;D and we did the handphone in the box trick ;D however, the seniors took that time to slack ;D and refused to pick up the phone -.- it had a cool ringtone btw.
So then me and my dear alien-ish escort, lye yingyan brought the seniors to dinner. Which was held on that platform thingy outside/near/behind canteen. It was beautiful, the view I mean ;D and we saw a woodpecker , which totally made MINLI excited ;D and gave all of us a good laugh. Hahas.
Then next up is the performance (: HAHS! Get excited ! the sec3s acted as dead/ half dead/alive looking creatures/dolls/witches/vampires/etc ( not sure what they are ) thingys ;D which totally rock socks ( in case u dun have socks. Then it just totally rocks ;D )
Boo yahs! And our dear sweet Maggie the witch, played the piano , which created a rocking atmosphere. Double boo yahs!
Next up, is the NOBODY performance (: which.is.freaking. HILARIOUS! Im serious. I got the video I think. U need paper bags when u watch it cause u will hyper ventilate cause u will laugh your ass off ;D ( in case u dun have an ass, u just laugh then ;D ) Rachel was just really funny ;D
Then we had the juniors performance which was really well prepared ;D well done guides! I know u really placed a lot of effort! Continue to work hard (: I know u can do it! And u did! Give yourself a pat on your back.
Okok, then it was the videos. Omg, it was really touching. I look forward to farewell next year alr ;D ( hint.hint )
Lastly was patrol interaction. We had candles glowing and it was actually the perfect atmosphere for emo-ing. But we didn’t have emo music, no emo speeches, so..the mood became quite high ;D we had trouble taking photos though cause everything was like.black, and dark.
Anyways, it was a great day, I enjoyed myself ;D and to ALL readers out there ;D I hoped u enjoyed reading this too(: have fun all! And jiayous!
Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall.

I assume it would be extremely cliche to start off by saying that farewell made me realize how much I was going to miss my seniors, and how I really can't quite imagine not having them around. Nonetheless, everyone wanted to put in as much effort to make sure that our last activity together would truly be an unforgettable one. Preparations started way before the actual day itself, the ICs being put through a whirlwind of choices and more even decisions. Questions were thrown all over; Would that be too lame? Would they really think that was funny? Would that be too much work? Would that ensure that ALL the seniors got the invitations? From the farewell date and venue itself, to the boiling down of the very balloons to be pasted around the hall, it was clear that the ICs wanted with every fibre of their being for this to be an event to be etched into each and everyone's memory.?

As the day unfolded, we saw everything we fabricated and weaved into our proposal materialize right before us. It was nerve-wrecking, agreed; but it was an excellent time for us (the Sec 3s) to really have a feel of the ropes and how running the company would be like. More importantly, it was rewarding to have the Sec 4 seniors laugh at what we put up, having as much fun as we had hoped they would. Personally, I enjoyed the very last moments of the farewell best. Cracking jokes as a patrol, and deciding whether we wanted to laugh at the joke or not; it was certainly something that I would miss. At the end of the day, although there were no weepy-sobbish tears of goodbye; there was however a pang of sadness, and the tinge of reluctance to drag our weary bodies home. End.

4TH ACTIVITY, 9TH JUNE 2009

Today's guides first activity was orienteering.We planned our routes and went off to our stations.I am from orchid patrol and my first station was the bedok stadium.At first i did not feel so tired. However, when we were on our wayto the third station which is red swastica primary school.I was feeling very tired but i know i must endure.When we reached the last station i was feeling quite happy.I knew all of us were tired and really want to head back to school to rest.The road back to school was tough it felt so long.When we finally reached school everybody was really happy and we came in third! We reached school at about 10.10am.50mins before the time given.so we got time to have patrol interaction and rest.Everybody was saying my face was as red as a tomato.Orienteering was tough and tiring but it can really bond our patrol andtrain our endurance.

We had orienteering on the 9th june and did the usual stuffs, like plotting the map and route etc. when my patrol, DOVE, saw the grid references, we were very shock as our route seems long. After plotting, we started the ‘journey’. Singapore Expo was our first station and we spent around 30min walking to there. Then, we walked to the Post Office which is at Simpang Bedok. After that, we backtracked to Changi General Hospital. Our last stop was the fire station. Overall, my patrol took 1½ hour to complete the whole thing. We were quite satisfied with the timing but we could have done better. While waiting for other patrols, those patrols which had reached started playing among themselves. It was quite fun. :D then, we had drills. It was quite tiring as our legs were shaking. NDP is coming so have to jia you.
Overall, today’s activity was quite tiring. And I learnt a lesson: eat your breakfast before coming for guides. :D

Friday we had GAMES! YAY!
The theme was 'Pirates', so all of the ma'ams were dressed up like pirates. :D

I totally did not understand the clue that was given to us on a piece of paper, but Selina solved it!
The first station we ran to was at the UMBRELLA AREA, we had to drag ourselves through a poncho with flour, cream and water on it to get to a bucket to find a rock. Of course, DOVE WON!!! We pored water on Hibiscus, 'floured' them, and sprayed whipped cream in their mouths. We also found a treasure, which was the school badge on a piece of paper. There was also a sunflower taped to a piece of paper on the floor, but we all thought it was Hibicus's, so we left it alone.

The words on the paper said to go to the parade square, but there were two patrols there already, so we went to the D & T area. We met Ying Yan ma'am there and we had to make her happy. We did a cheer, and she gave us water bombs! At the D & T area station, we played this game where we were given only a limit of people on the ground. We then did another cheer and the ma'ams there gave us SEVEN water bombs.

We returned back to the parade square and played this game called 'Black Pearl' where we had to keep the ball in the air by hitting it towards the other patrol. For this Dove lost to Hibiscus and we were showered with water bombs.

The last station we went to was at the canteen where we had to balance our way across two benches with something on our heads. We also did a cheer and were given water bombs.

After the last station, we all went to the church carpark where we played 'The Toilet Paper Game'. It's jjust like Captain's Ball, but only played with a roll of toilet paper, as the name of the game suggests. Then, we had to hand back our treasures and Dove won because we found two!

After that, we all went back to the concourse and did another changing parade. Our seniors were happy with our timing so we only had to do it once.

Then, we did the song-signing thing for our Sec2s at the Parade Square. After that, the Sec2 and 3 seniors were awarded badges and we were dismissed.

“WHOOOHOOO finally gg act!”

At the start, we had the introduction of the sec3 members. I felt really high and excited about the differences of how they ran the company, and probably about the activities planned ahead for us.

After that we had changing parade, which was quite tiring. ): However, it trained our sense of urgency and time management skills. I felt a bit disappointed in our performance too. ): We managed to keep up with the time limit, which was very encouraging. ;D;D;D

We then had games!! I was very fun and entertaining. As Sec2s we had to take care of our juniors and it was really new experience as we had no longer our sec3s to rely on. However, I think we did a good job (: We had clues towards finding our first clue. I was really unsure of the clue thing as we just ran to a station we saw. In the end, we seeked help from Charlene ma’am and found the clue, which was just under our noses. (Actually it was on a pillar, so it was above our heads)

We went to our first station which was the DNT area. We had to go into a “little parking lot” to play that game. The challenging part was to not stand on our two feet. We managed to pull through the first round when i was piggyback-ed. It was really challenging for the last round when we had to all remove our feet on the ground and have only 3 people sitting on the ground. We managed to please YanYan ma’am to give us goodies (:

On the way to our second station, we were caught by Pirate helpers (?) and we had to do a forfeit! But thankfully we only had 1 balloon confiscated.

We went to the second section and played the caterpillar game to find the stone ultimately. Kingfisher won us and we were “splashed” with flour. WOHH. I decided to jump all around to get snowflake imitations (:

Then we went to play the third station. We had to hit a ball and pose after that. It was really difficult at first as I kept on losing my balance. Then the second round was to have our hands tied at the back of our body. We had a really fun time playing and even got a bonus balloon. We had to think of a brand new cheer and in the end, we did

“GOOD CHEER GOOD CHEER IXORA HAS GOOD CHEER!!”

Overall, I think that this activity was really enjoyable and exciting. It was definitely a new experience and I really had a lot of fun playing all the games.

#16 - Handover 09

Firstly , we had changing parade. We were asked to change into our dark coloured tee and we did it in the time given :D I think it is really good as we could keep to the time limit. Then , it was station games ! My combined patrol , spabi ( sparrow & hibiscus ) , first went to the canteen . It was the straw game . Then we had to connect the straws together to form a longer straw. Sparrow got the longest one , while hibi only got 3 straws connected together. And it was all a trick . LOL. winner team got 1 cup only , while loser team got 2 cups of water to drink from the straw. & of coz , HIBI WON :D ( as our straw is shorter.. lols ) Then it was a tie la.. so we nid to cheer to see who louder :D

i created one part of the cheer randomly . lols . then hibi won again :D haha. Then, we went on to the next station which is the station near the towerhall :D We had to use our creativity and learn to put our body parts down , like what clara boh said. After that spabi did the forfeit which is to roll over the ponchos splashed with water. oh , it was cooling ;x Third station was the butterfly station . LOL. we played ice and water .. i didnt really get wet :D haha. We had to do a forfeit which is to wear our skirts until like above our waist ..lol it was really funny :D then it was time to assemble . then we had a short patrol interaction time. Up next was changing parade. We were all given 10mins to change into our full guides uni. We exceeded the time by a little bit but i think it was still quite good as the sec1s are changing into the uni for the 2nd time. But we could still improve on it to keep to the time limit. After that it was the handover ceremony . The horseshoe formation is so cool :D It is like the enrolment ceremony but just a little changes during the process. I am so happy that the whole company persevered to the end and no one fell out . I had the urge to as my leg was really numb .. but i did not as i know i must endure ! :D and i did . hahaha . so did u ! :D after the ceremony ended , we had our break at the canteen . Then , the sec1s gave the sec4s a wonderful present :D

and each of us received a hug from Yi Jing mam :D Then we finished up the food and cleared the tables. Next , we fall in and got dismissed .
Overall , i think we did quite well as no one fell out . that was fabulous :D And we had to thank the seniors for their never ending support !

Started Guides with a heavy heart, it is Handover today. Felt really different from last year, maybe it was because we bonded more and so on.

Fall in in front of the flagpole under the blazing hot sun then the usual routine. Questions, attention, take dressing, check attire but it was incomplete. We had to redo the whole thing (skipping the attire check part). My initial thought was “okay, Yi Jing ma’am is back.” But then it struck me a moment later that it was because today’s handover. My thoughts ran wild and I felt rather down. The whole company had to do punishments which were thankfully, helped to divert my attention for a while. We were not supposed to have a glum look pasted on our faces.

We changed to our dark coloured tshirt. Ixora had short combined patrol interaction with Flowerpecker before station games. We carried our 1.5s and blindfolds while in search of the ‘hidden’ stations. If I remembered correctly, Pamela ma’am was following us. Initially, we were at a loss as we went to the Home Econs area to search but there was not a single senior in sight. So we ran back to the concourse and the sec3s led us to the classrooms to try our luck.

HA HA, we found a station in 2H classroom. We played blindfolded Musical Chairs with Venus ma’am being the DJ and Lynn ma’am as our guide. Holding hands and walking around and around the chairs blindfolded made me so dizzy and blur. It seemed like a quest to find someone with the biggest buttocks, to me, which was fun.

And HA HA, for the second time. We went to the canteen station with Jasmine ma’am and Ting En i/c as station mistress. Each patrol had to make the longest straw in 30s. Both patrols will be given cups of water to empty in the shortest time possible I think. Yun Jin started drinking but it was too slow and someone suggested blowing air into it. Blowing into the water equals to water spilt out. Ixora lost, Flowerpecker won. So the losing patrol has to take tissue from the toilet and clear the water up. I thought that was all but there was a forfeit. Flowerpecker, made us write ‘PECKXORA’ using our beautiful (hopefully) big butts at the canteen entrance. But luckily, there were not many people around so I guess only Flowerpecker was having a delightful time laughing at us.

I am not going to say HA HA again(: We went to the Parade Square to play Ice and Water with Grace Ma’am and Evangelin i/c. The Ice patrol – Flowerpecker, was given masking tape to stick onto the other patrol. The Water patrol which was us, were given 20 water bombs to make them wet. The patrol with the most number of masking tape on them or very wet will have to do a forfeit. Then the fun started. Clara helped me to bite the bomb to make a hole. I could squish the bomb a little and the water would spurt out and wet the opponent. I had three with me but I threw one when it just started so I was left with two. HA HA, and I went around squirting water at Flowerpecker who was ‘bullying’ my junior so I got back at them. Denise started to chase me around the area when my water bombs ‘died’ on me. I was really enjoying myself though. After clearing up the mess we made, we had to fall in. And it seems to be a tie so PeckXora had to wear our skirts as high as possible as our forfeit.

Then we had patrol interaction since time was almost up. PeckXora ‘explored’ the different ways to wear our skirts high. The normal one would be just below the chest, worn normally which looked like some gothic-emotional edition Hanbok. Black and white. The sexy kind was to wear over our chest with the buckle and zip in the middle, like some halter-top without straps. Then we tried to wear it normally above the chest which looked so much better but it was hard to buckle so we left it alone. It became impossible to find another way to wear our skirts so we just sat down and yakked away. The Parade Square ground was horribly hot that maybe we got blisters on our butts. Then it was just Ixora patrol. So we started with our usual chitchat and the playful throwing of blindfolds around.

We were given 10mins(?) to change to our Guides Uniform but we exceeded the time limit although we had time extension. We sat down and talked a while. You could see many scared and dejected faces even before the handover ceremony.

Then the terror started. Roll call first then we made the horseshoe formation. We had to march on the spot for a long time to alter the position of the horseshoe because we had limited space. The ceremony started. I felt okay at first. However, when the sec4s marched out, it made me feel like I something was taken away from me. Then Flowerpecker PS was Clara Tan which means CLARA TRANSFER OUT OF IXORA. I heard sniffs and sobs, from myself and those in Ixora. Then I heard my name, Ixora PS. I could not believe what had happened, it was too fast. Am I the reason why Clara transferred out? I don’t know but tears just streamed out of my eyes. My, so sad. I saw Suan Ching ma’am and the other ma’ams’ face. And I cried even harder. I cannot remember who said what but I think I heard “save your tears for later”. Still, I continued crying. When marching back, I could not find Ixora then I spotted the sobbing-very-hard-Jia-en and Hwee Fen’s very sad look. Throughout the whole ceremony, I could not feel my toes. Everyone was too pre-occupied with who’s what and the sadness which came like waves crashing against them, continuously. Sorry, I cannot remember who became this this that. Finally, the thing ended. Hugging Yun Jin and Natasha after trying to fold my beret and crying out louder, which I couldn’t earlier on. Handover’s over, too fast. But the terror did not end. The sec4s will be leaving us and Clara not in Ixora. We lost a patrolmate but we got a junior, Rebecca.

Snack time in the canteen, singing Grace, exchanging Peach Tea for Lemon Tea with Hibiscus, chatter and HA HAs and tears. Then we were dismissed. No one went away yet, too busy with taking photographs here and there. Fun and laughter everywhere, topped with confusion and unhappiness. I didn’t feel like going back yet, sat around on the Parade Square with Rachel, Valerie and Denise after changing. See the orange wave-like pattern which resembles a person soaring and another below; it pretty much ended this year’s Handover.

Games were kinda challenging, idk why I feel tt way either hee. Minli Maam and Yanyan Maam’s current patrols combined and were called “Kingflower!” for the day’s games! We were losers and didn’t find the bonus checkpoint. :o

It’s now my batch’s turn to takeover this company & we all don’t know what’s going to be in for us within the next one year that we’ll be taking over. Nevertheless I’m sure all 18 of us will give it our utmost and do what’s best for this company:) Sec1s, be good guides and listen to your seniors. Sec2s, rmb to take good care of the sec1s and set good examples and listen to the Sec3s, whatever the posts they have gotten. Sec3s, let’s rock smelly socks! :DD

Meow! Hahahah, I like to meow nowadays. Okay anyway :D to my sec3 batchmates! We are 18 girls and we’re all going to go through loads of fun tgt YAY. As in srsly, conflicts + gossiping + handling of juniors + weekly proposals + taking supercalifragi good care of the company, and to work towards PNA G!

This was what my vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv good friend once told me before Handover this year when I was fretting about a whole load of stuff (:

“No one cares what post you’ve gotten and what rank you’ve had before when you were a senior after you’ve passed out; juniors only care and will remember you because of what you have left, taught, & instilled in them.”

It totally enlightened me. In our own ways, we can achieve what we want from the juniors even if we do not get that desired post; don’t you guys feel it’s more meaningful? (Do not start thinking abt terrorizing them k hor.)

Who cares about the posts? I don’t already. As long as we stay tgt as a batch, stay happy, stay out of trouble with one another… what more can we ask for? (:

Oh ya, for Charlene to start considering to buy a brain & make sure she doesn’t spell her name wrongly as “CHALENE” on the back of her book anymore & to only realize it later WHEN I TELL HER (which btw is ½ a year later). Or think that char siew meat comes from a bird, or always does freestyle dancing when she thinks no one is looking… aiyah so much more lah hor Charlene Cai? HAHAH!! What the!! LAMEEEEEEEEEEE. Ok just kidding!!! :DDDD

But main point is.

Whoever’s sad now, everything happens for a reason and damn, so many seniors have said that our batch is supeduperfuper got potential so really, let’s just be kickbutt seniors that will rock smelly socks!! & no post is bad. EVER. Whoever’s feeling pekchek now, alamak. Whoever’s feeling happy/satisfied now, vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv sui for you. #15 - Enrolment Ceremony 09

So we're enrolled!
First thing we did was changing parade. It was the sec-ones first changing parade into full guides uniform. Some of us had a little trouble with it, but the sec-twos helped us, which was nice of them(: Then we ran back down the stairs, Miss Chua came out of her classroom and told us that we were making too much noise, so that's something that we can improve on. Then was enrollment, the sec-ones went into horse shoe formation for the very first time, which was quite cool. Then we started to get enrolled. It was an interesting experience for me. So now that we're enrolled, we have to jiayou.

Had enrolment on wed. Was a little worried as some of us had not tied braids. But, we were given 15mins for changing parade. So, we had sufficient time to make sure that our attire was proper. After the sec 4s checked our attire, we were given 3mins water break. Then,we were seated in the concourse. The sec 1s repeated our honour and our promise a number of times among ourselves as we were pretty worried about being nervous and forgetting them.
Following that,we fall in beside our PLs and then, marched into the horseshoe formation. A few of my batch mates had told me about how awed they were seeing our seniors marching in the horseshoe formation on thinking day and were excited about the fact that they would be joinning in the formation this time. As I was in the last patrol,Hibiscus<3,>

It was enrolment ceremony on Wednesday afternoon. Enrolment ceremony was very significant for the secondary one batch because we were officially enrolled as guides. Before the ceremony, we had changing parade and we changed in our guides uniform for the first time. All of us were so proud to be wearing such a smart uniform. The seniors helped us adjust the uniform and the secondary twos aided us in wearing them. The seniors explained to us about the procedure of enrolment ceremony. However, despite repeated explanations from the seniors, most of the secondary ones were still not sure about the exact procedure so we were extremely nervous and afraid that we would be scolded if we made a mistake. Then after, the Colours was being put up and we had to stand at attention each time something important was being adjusted to the Colours. Before the enrolment ceremony, we wear our beret and march into the horseshoe formation. I was so scared because I had no idea how to go about doing that. After the enrolment ceremony was officially opened by the teacher, each patrol’s recruits had to march out together with our patrol leaders and we had to say what our honour means and recite the Guides’ Pledge before saluting to Colours and getting our enrolment batch pinned on our scarves. The enrolment ceremony was kind of frightening actually because the entire company was looking at us but exciting at the same time as we were being enrolled as guides after about two and a half months in guides. After each one of us were enrolled, we all felt extremely relieved. Then we were dismissed and most patrols had patrol interaction. I hope my batch can keep to the guides promise.

#14 - Friday Activity

The activities on Friday's Girl Guides were interesting, first we had Gadget Tying, tying the 12'' poles onto the 72'' poles was quite okay as I've done it before but tying two poles together while blindfolded was something very new to me and i didn't manage to tie finish the two poles together. My friend however, managed to tie the two poles together and did it quite well. Seeing that, I felt quite embarrassed as if she could do it, why couldn't I? Thus, I feel that I need to practise Gadget Tying on my own and try to tie the standard Square Lash within the standard time.

After Gadget Tying, we did Orienteering and my patrol had the shortest route so we felt that we needed to come back to school the first since we travelled the least. My Sec 2's carried the backpack for the first half of the way, i took over one of the backpack's after that. The last part of the route, we had to climb up a hill to reach the school, just then we saw Sparrow reaching the school soon too and we ran back to the concourse, arriving first just as we felt we needed to. Orienteering is actually very fun as I got to know the location of a certain place, the name of somewhere I had passed by many times before and how to get to the Bedok Stadium from our school( I had never walked there before ). Besides that, it teaches me how to read maps and find my way if I ever get lost.

Lastly, we had Drills. The weather was not hot and the air was cooling so our seniors expected us to do our Drills well. I feel that we could've performed better if we just listened to the timer and locked our arms, so as to keep our balance, then we could turn, lift our legs to 90 degrees pointed down and bang at the same time. We just need to practise more, then I think we will perform quite well.

Today for Guide activity, we did 3 main things.

The first activity we did was gadget tying. We sec2s were told to go to 1 Perseverance classroom [I think X)] to fall in. There, we were given 2 minutes to tie a standard square lash. After that, we were given 30 seconds to untie the gadget. We repeated the above another time, when the ICs told us that we would try to tie a square lash BLINDFOLDED. I was a little surprised as I never thought that it would be possible to tie a square lash blindfolded. Haha:D we were given 3 minutes to tie the square lash. I was able to complete the tying in 2+mins, but I overlapped at some parts. Then, sec2s went to 1 Respect classroom [I think again XD]. There, we were told to join our patrols. In our patrols, we had to tie a shoe rack in 10 mins.

After gadgetying, we had neighbourhood orienteering in our patrols:DD we were given a map with another paper giving the grid references. In our patrols, we had to find out the places that we were supposed to go. However, my patrol screwed up and read the map wrongly and ended up having to identify our destinations again. Luckily, we did not take much time, and managed to find the correct places. We then proceeded out of the main school gate to our first station – Tanamera Crest. It only took us a while to walk from AHS to the condominium. After taking the photograph, we then moved on to our next destination, which was the playground at Pari Dedap Walk. As it was quite near to the condominium, we could reach the playground in around 10 minutes. Our next and last station before going back to the school was the Lions’ Home for the Elders. As I live quite near to the home, I was able to lead my patrol to our station without much difficulty :D Next, we proceeded back to school. As majority of the patrol was already quite tired, we brisk walked back to AHS. Along the way back we were deciding on whether to run back or to continue at a steady pace. We finally decided on running short distances, and walking after that for another short distance. After a tiring journey back to school, we finally reached. We had took a total of 1 hour for the whole orienteering, and came in 6th. We then had patrol interaction for a while.

Our third main activity was a short drill session. The sec3s were in charge of sec2s and we marched for a while. After that, we were dismissed. We then had an interaction session with Yijing Ma’am. As a batch, we talked with Yijing Ma’am about many different topics, from relationships with other CCAs to scandals. Haha XD We only ended at about 6.48PM and we were quite surprised that we had interacted for about an hour. :D

Overall, I really enjoyed today’s activity, especially the neighbourhood orienteering as well as the interaction session. However, I feel that I could have put in more effort during gadgetying as the ICs mentioned that my frapping could be tighter. I also feel that the neighbourhood orienteering helped me to put my orienteering skills to test, and I hope there will be another orienteering session some time again. :D I think that today’s activity was great! :D

Today’s Friday Activity could probably be summed up in a single word – FUN. (Haha!) Ok, it was probably not that fun when we had to walk under the hot afternoon sun, but still I think it was fun. That was fun-ny.

Now, to start the ball rolling, our first activity for today was Gadget Tying in 1SOMETHING. The first ‘part’ of the activity was no more than a humdrum routine of repeated Square-lash tying and pulling of twines.. HAHA! That certainly did help our juniors (not forgetting ourselves) improve on their (and our) Gadget Tying skills. Do you call them ‘skills’? Ok, I think so.

Then came the fun. We were turned into blind men (with the help of blindfolds and our eyelids, LOL) and were told to tie a Square lash in that manner. My square lash turned out to be not so much of a disaster as I’ve expected it to be. Also, many Sec1s and 3s did tie square lashes they are most proud of. The activity was not only creative, but was also super extremely ultra-engaging.

What we’ve learnt may also be put into good practical use in times of emergency, such as the setting up of an emergency shelter in pitch-blackness. (This is what the kind Jia-En told me.)

Later on, our Sec2 juniors joined us as a Patrol and we proceeded to tie a mini shoe rack suitable for huge shoes. Kingfisher’s shoe rack did not look VERY nice but I felt it was still quite presentable. (You must be thinking, ‘Of course you would say that’.)

After gadget tying, the company gathered in the concourse for a briefing on Orienteering. General rules and instructions such as the to-dos during an emergency were addressed. This helped get the company to be more ‘mentally-prepared’ – like knowing what to do should a Patrol member fall unconscious (just kidding). Maps were also handed out to individual patrols, and they quickly plotted the points as well as planned their routes.

Before long, all 8 patrols had already set out for their neighbourhood hike, with Sunflower, Flowerpecker, and Kingfisher leaving last. Although navigation was not a problem, the hike itself was rather tiring, but not extremely tiring (I think I’m undecided). (Yes, tell me you share my sentiments!!)

The 3 checkpoints Kingfisher went to were the Simpang Bedok Post Office, Bedok Methodist Church, and the Bedok Stadium. I dare (and proudly) say that Kingfisher took one of, if not the longest route among all 8 patrols. I am not trying to put any Patrol down OK!! (It’s just to make Kingfisher feel better.)

The patrol members took turns to carry the 2 backpacks, which was a rather encouraging sign to see. Besides, the Sec2s also cared for the Sec1s. (And so did the Sec3… *blinks with overweening pride*). We brisk-walked from one checkpoint to another and tried to run as far as possible. However, we were also compassionate enough to wait for one another.

The walking went on and on and on and after almost an eon, the coolest Patrol ever (Kingfisher) finally reached the school gates! Then, we were left with the last atom of our strength (this is a hyperbole) and almost couldn’t feel our legs anymore. YAY!!!! We returned to loud cheers from the company. YAY!! (We sure deserved it, RIGHT? Just kidding!)

Even though Kingfisher was sadly the last patrol (and the slowest), due consideration should be spared for us since we took such a long route. Haha! (*Tries to gain more sympathy..*) Sooo, we deserve a standing ovation more than a mere pat on the back, ok!

All in all, I guess Kingfisher somewhat realised how and why we should not count our chickens before they’re hatched (since we even fell into a reverie that we would be the first patrol).

After Orienteering, we had another fun thing – Foot Drills!!! Foot Drills was kind of impromptu but nonetheless fun. The Sec3s were split into half with one half taking the Sec1s and the other half taking the Sec2s. Yay.

#13 - Nyaa Award Presentation Ceremony

Today,16 of the sec4s went down to Singapore Polytechnic for the NYAA ceremony. (fast forward to reaching there) Upon reaching there, we realized that the bus dropped us off at the wrong point and walked 4 carparks down to the venue.

Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, Senior Minister of Finance and Transport was the guest-of-honour. The ceremony was alot about listening to the speeches made by the various figureheads and clapping for many others, whilst one wait for one's turn to walk up the stage and walk down in 10seconds. Though, one inspirational figure was a disabled guy who took up NYAA as an individual to challenge himself to greater heights in his own life, as he felt that he had nothing to lean back on, should he fail in his acdemic aspect.

After the whole ceremony was the photo-taking, followed by a tea reception where our guides showed their true colours, pouncing like a tiger pounces on its prey. Because the silver-awardees were released later, most people had taken their share of food and thus, the queues were not as long. As like most of these tea reception, there were items such as bee hoon, soon kueh, mid-wings, small pieces of pizza, bite-size pieces of oreo cheesecake. Our guides took their share of food and we assembled in a circle, having a good time of bonding with the accompaniment of the food. I believe that the guides had their fair share of refreshments.

Following, we took some group photos before making our journey back to the east.

#10 -Sec1 Training Camp o9

DAY 1

Hello! Today’s activity was planned by the O/ICs of the training camp. Although this is the 3rd time the sec 3s are taking charge of activity, I guessed all the sec 3s are still nervous and excited with regards to what will happen during the activity. The main objective of this camp was to train the sec 1s and teach them new skills (: The whole activity was quite successful although there was some miscommunication going on.

To start the day off, all sec 3s agreed to meet outside the general office at 7.30 to discuss what is going to happen during the activity and some last minute changes. I was quite impressed that most of the sec 3s were early for the meeting, everyone look excited and nervous, going through thoroughly what roles they play in today activity. Some had already prepared notes on what to say during the activity. The activity is going to start soon; the sec 1s is falling in. It is still drizzling and the schedule has to be changed to wet weather plan.

All of us proceed to the concourse and get ready for falling in. It is the first time the sec 3s is doing this and most of them looked quite nervous when they were falling in. I guessed they were scared of forgetting what to do. But it went very smoothly though. All sec 1s turned up for the camp and we were all very happy to see that.

The first activity was luggage inspection, Yanyan, Shihui & I took the first two patrols, namely Golgi apparatus & mitochondria. This is the first time the sec 1s are doing luggage inspection and we as the I/Cs for this activity is supposed to teach the sec 1s for the luggage inspection. We notice that when we were teaching the sec 1s to do luggage inspection, they were all listening attentively to us. They also clarify their doubt before falling back in. We gave the sec 1s time limit to unpack all their luggage and the sec 1s were always on time. Although they were always on time, there were no sense of urgency at all; we hope that the sec 1s could improve on that. I am glad to see that the sec 1s did take time. The bad point is that when they have finished unpacking their luggage, they just fall in when their fellow guides are still struggling to unpack their luggage. We reminded them that they had to help one another and they only help their fellow guides after repeated reminders from us.

The next activity was changing parade, 5 people fall out. Which was quite a disappointment to the sec 3s as it is not even 1 hour into the training camp and 5 people had already fallout.

Next was Physical Training, Priscilla, HuiFen & I were the I/Cs. When we asked the sec 1s how many sets they think they should do, they said 2 sets. All the sec 3s there were applaud. We asked them again and they said 10 sets, which also applaud us in a sense. We asked them to start themselves and all of them went into pumping position, which puzzled us. We told them to start doing crunches first, than we realised that they did not know what was next. So, some of the sec 3s started scolding the sec 1s. We told them the whole PT procedure and they continued doing. During the PT, some sec 1s fall out. When they were doing PT, some of their positions they were in where not standard. Some sec 3s walked around correcting their positions, only to find out that after a while they went back to their original positions. This angers the sec 3s as we felt that they did not listen to us. However, we must understand that this is only their second time doing PT. We also did not realise that when we asked the sec 1s to stop in the middle of a set, they restarted again from zero instead of the continuing from the number they stopped. That was a mistake on our part. The sec 1s has only done PT once and we thought that they already knew what PT was and the procedure was. But, we made a mistake, the sec 1s had done PT before but they do not know what “sets” was & what the procedure of PT was. That was our mistake also. During PT there were some over right of authority among the sec 3s, but eventually we solved the problem (: All in all, I can see that some sec 1s put in their effort to should while others did not. So we hope that all sec 1s could put in their best effort to shout and do standard though.

Next up, we had drills for a short while than it was outdoor cooking. The twigs, husk, kindling that the sec 1s picked were not really standard. Some of the bags were full but others were half full. We even found green bamboos in the plastic bags ?! For outdoor cooking, some patrols were fast in digging their holes and setting up fire while others were still having problems digging a hole. It is obvious that some sec 1s know how to do outdoor cooking properly while other sec 1s just stone there and watch their seniors do everything for them. However, while helping the sec 1s in the outdoor cooking, the sec 3s teach them too. We had to teach the sec 1s to be independent and not rely on their seniors to help them. Ribosome did a very good job during outdoor cooking, they did almost everything themselves without the seniors helping them much. Overall, Outdoor cooking was quite successful though.

Moving on, we had gadget tying. Although this is the 3rd time the sec 1s are doing gadget tying, quite a number is able to tie a square lash within 2 minutes. However, they made a lot of mistakes like overlapping and not tucking in their knots. They did punishment for their mistakes. Overall, I felt that it is already quite good for a sec 1 to be meeting this standard.

Next we had bathing parade which was probably the most enjoyable activity for me. Some of the sec 1s said they enjoyed the bathing parade in their reflection. Than it was enrolment dry run, followed by dismantling of gadgets poles and cleaning up.

The reflection that the sec 1s wrote were all positive reflection, example like they enjoyed the activity although it was very tough, but they feel a sense of accomplishment. They also wrote the things they think they did not do well in like taking time and waiting for one another etc.

For the debrief, we tell them their bad points and where they could improve on as well as praise them for enduring through this training camp etc. They did not do punishment as they had already done a lot during the camp. All In all, the sec 1s should improve on their sense of urgency, keep time and learn to wait for one another. However, the sec 3s themselves also have to improve on ourselves like keeping to the schedule as most of the I/Cs overshot the time limit given and we also had to scold reasonably as most of the activities are quite new to the sec 1s.

All in all, I enjoyed the whole experience of being the O/IC of the camp; it was a new experience for me as well as my fellow batch mates. I understand that it was not easy organising activity and without everyone cooperation the first day of camp would not have ended successfully. Now, I finally understand the feeling of our senior when the scold us and why they could get so angry with us at times. I hope that both the sec 3s and sec 1s had benefit from today’s activity. DAY 1 of training camp...It was tough..but not as tough as i imagined.haha always think of the worst^^. i woke up early in the morning, reached school,saw many people:D. checked my luggage, made sure everything was there. times up! fall in! The camp starts(nervous). the first activity was luggage inspection-shouldn't have brought so much rubbish..had to take out EVERYTHING. Starting was bad, practically bad - couldn't shout and wasn't fast enough.

After that was changing parade if im not wrong..we ran serveral times,up and down, changed from pe tee to black tee, black te to pe tee. can't remember when the first person falled out, but many did. Seniors said we should endure throughout the camp together and hoped that no one else would fall out as it was only the start of the camp and already abt 5 people falled out. however i think we can't blame them, it's not that they don't want to endure but they are not feeling well. After that on the way to PT, i got kidnapped! together with ally and jia ying' It was so cool! but same time worried for the others.. confirm do punishment.. felt quite guilty oso because we were relaxing away, drinking water.. PT was the toughest. I hate pumping! Soon was outdoor cooking- i was hardly full.. the dessert was nice-choc!:) fire wasn't steady..so had to eat half-cooked marcaroni with cheese! haha but it was nice^^. then must thank the kind sec 3s who helped alot!

then we went to the classrms to do luggage rack. it was a failure... all couldn't even stand. then it was bathing time! three minutes! lol i was late by i think more that 20 secs. got splashed twice haha so fun dodging. Bathing parade was fun! ahhh my memory is bad.. cant remember wats nxt. drills? ahhh cant remember.can i stop here? longg post...

DAY 2

I feel that though the second day of camp was tough , it was not as tough as the first day . And as we were already had experience the first day of camp , the second day managed to be much easier than I expected . I also had a lot of fun during station game and Pt game. As the duck walk was very tough , I was always lagging behind and the other had to wait for me . And for that , I am very grateful to them . During PT , I realised that I did like it at all . And during drills I am very thankful that my ICs were very patient with me as I had swimming lessons and was not able to make it to most of the drills . Though I keep making mistakes, I was very happy that the ICs did not give up on me. Overall, I am quite proud of myself being able to finish thee whole camp and feel that I am stronger and have a better sense of urgency .

I think that for the second day of training camp, we improved a lot from the first day. Of course, we still have a lot of room for improvement. To me, this camp was tiring but it was really benefitial because we really learnt a lot of things, such as learning how to tie a luggage rack (it actually didn't fall down!). We also learned to have a sense of urgency, and we waited for each other most of the time, as compared to the first day, which we didn't wait for each other at all. We learned to ask for time extension, and to do things together AS A BATCH. Although the seniors scolded us a lot, all of that was to help us to improve on our bad points. I think that we really have to improve on one point, and that is to remember to take time. The seniors told us repeatedly to remember to take time, but we kept forgetting even though each patrol had at least one watch. Overall, this was a really unforgettable experience for me. :)

I thought that training camp day2 was much better as compared to Day1. The first day was very tiring, I was so exhausted. But, we, as a whole batch really learnt many new useful things through the sec1 training camp. We were taught to have a good sense of urgency, take initiative and help others in need. I think that these three points are very important as the sec3s kept repeating and scolding us about these. Day2 was much better, we already got into the training camp mood and knew what to expect. But it was also tough as we were all tired after the first day and still had to do alot of physical training. The duckwalk was the worst. Everyone felt like their knees were going to break. What was our worst performance on the day was changing parade and gadget tying. We left someone tagging behind us when we were running down the stairs but no one waited for her. Also, at gadget tying, we kept exceeding the time limit and did not ask for time extension. Overall, i feel that our batch has learnt alot of new knowledge and benefitted from this camp, and we have improved alot from when we first started. Keep working hard to those who fell out at camp and all the sec1s:)

The much awaited yearly Sec1 training camp is here again! Day1 have past quickly with the sec1s trying on many activities on their own such as outdoor cooking and gadget tying and day 2 will focus more on bonding and training them physically

As this is the first time the sec3s is taking over for such activities with long hours, we were quite nervous being ICs for the first day but after learning from our mistakes and gaining experiences from day 1, we were much more confidant and are sure that we can carry out our activity better on the second day. We started the day as usual with our normal roll call, with Mindy and Deborah starting the roll call instead. We were satisfied with the attire of the sec1s as none of them were needed to do punishment. While the sec1s are pondering over what is their next activity, me, cherlin and xiujian ran over to the netball court to get ready for luggage inspection.

Instead of implementing jumping jacks for punishment, we decided to try something new as we hope to train our juniors in other ways. We decided to make them run if they were late and I ran around the netball court to test out what was the appropriate time. The sec1s came and we separate them into first 2 and last 2 patrols, us taking the last 2 patrols. From what we observed yesterday, the last 2 patrols were quite slow in doing luggage inspection and we hope to see them today to work faster and to have the habit of helping other people once you are done. We gave them only a minute and half to take out everything and they completed it on time yet one or two person didn’t take out everything from their bags. We gave them a minute to put everything back and they completed on time again. We gave them a minute to take everything out and they overshoot the time and we were disappointed that no one took time and they were moving slowly despite the short time we gave. They did their punishment and we gave them only 45 seconds to put everything back and they overshoot again and no one bothered to take time. We were quite disappointed and hope that the sec1s will learn to take time and to move fast.

Next was changing parade and as I am the first aid IC, I stood there and watched the sec1s. They are required to change at the upper sec 4th floor toilet and from what I observed, the sec1s didn’t try to run or wait for the rest and by the time they asked for time extensions, they were already late. Although running up to 4th floor toilet to change is tiring, but we hope to see the sec1s to put in more effort. Next was station games and I can see that the sec1s enjoyed the games and they learn something from every game. After that was orienteering and I was not present and thus not sure what happened there hehe

NEXT was PT GAMESSS :DDDDD minli, yanyan, clara and I were the ics for it and we were quite excited for it as its different from normal physical trainings. We organised one which was similar to what we had when we were sec1s. There will be combines patrols and 2 persons will have to race up and do 10 standard pumpings and every person who did standard is rewarded with a water bomb and the rest have to duck walk. We chose duck walk as we feel that it’ll train the sec1s legs and most importantly to teach them to endure and to encourage their fellow batch mates not to give up at the same time. We were quite pleased with their performance as no one fall out but we hope to see them encouraging each other more and when we give them water breaks they need to take time although its games. We hope through this activity the sec1s will bond more with each other.

Next was changing parade followed by emergency shelter and then it was PT. During PT the ICs taught them the proper way to do PT and what is a set and the sec1s carried out their PT with 6 sets. Some of them improved and tried to do standard but when the seniors corrected them some of them still went back to their original positions. One or two sec1s pulled their muscles and had to stop and rest and some people had cuts too and after me and Priscilla applied medicine on their wounds, they offered to rejoin the sec1s and we were happy to see that. Following is lunch and the sec3s were quite happy we were able to have a full lunch

After lunch was campfire songs followed by gadget tying. At 310, we commence our drills with me and yingyan taking over for 8 sec1s. We were quite pleased with their drills as most of the time they managed to get their kekenan, kekiri and keblakan right but when we implemented 5 samulas 15 jumping jacks, they failed to count them and after countless times of samulas they still did not take the initiative to count. Yet when we teach them how to form a contingent, they learn it quite fast and got the hang of it quickly and we could start making them march instead of normal drills. We were satisfied with their drills and hope them can improve in terms of their bangs, being more alert and learn to shout louder if you are the timer.

After that was reflection and debrief and punishment and we said all the mistakes the sec1s committed and they did 50 jumping jacks and 50 catch stars along with the sec3s and we hope through this training camp they’ll leave this camp not empty handed but an experienced which they valued and use this chance to improve on their guides skills, physical health and bond the whole batch.

Alas lastly was prize presentation and I hope the sec1s feel honoured getting whatever patrol prize or individual prize as they really earned it and the sec3s are relieved that the training camp is finally over

So starts HF’s reflection. Here goes! -Takes deep breath-

20th March 2009, marks the continuation of the sec 1s’ grueling training camp. It’s DAY 2! 0_0

For the sec 1s, I would surmise it was with fearful anticipation and a certain feeling of the heebie-jeebies that they arrived in school and prepared themselves for what they would most certainly deduce as the second day of “torture”. For us sec 3s, it was with slight apprehension and a better control of our emotions as compared to yesterday that we faced the start of this dreaded, yet long-awaited second day. For me, well. It’s basically just a serious case of butterflies and stress and watered-down PANIC. Almost as usual x) you totally can’t tell! ;DDD

First up was of course the falling in part. All the sec 3s were hidden at some corner overlooking the parade square observing the sec 1s, trying to count how many were still present after their shocking first day. Were they still “brave” enough or will they find some excuse to skip the second day? Haha. We even made a deal among ourselves that takes effect if less than 10 sec 1s showed up, which I won’t elucidate further since it didn’t happenJ The O/ICs that took charge of the roll call that day were Deborah and Mindy, and we followed through the standard procedure without incident. I took my place at the back of the patrol with the other sec 3s and managed not to burst out laughing (out of hysteria or pure humour, I don’t know), which was by no means an easy feat. [The joke starts with M and ends with y. LOL. Sorry haha]

The first activity, luggage inspection, was taken charge by Priscilla, Charlene, ME, Annabella, Cher Lin and Xiu Jian. We ran with the sec 1s to the netball court, thereafter starting the luggage inspection. They could have been more urgent as they only had 1 bagpack to carry with more than ample time given, unlike our training camp, where we had to run to the netball court within 45 seconds with a bagpack, handcarry and 2 bags each of twigs, husks and kindlings (MAN were they heavy!). Priscilla, Charlene and I were in charge of inspecting Golgi Apparatus and Mitochondria’s luggage. They were early for both the 1st and 2nd inspection when taking out their luggage, but exceeded the time when they had to put everything back. Although a minority forgot to take out some stuff and left rubbish in their bags, they helped one another and remembered to take note of time, which was an improvement from yesterday. However, when they were running back to the concourse, they did not wait for each other and asked for time extension only after they had exceeded the time limit.

Next up was changing parade. They were to change from PE tee & school skirt to dark coloured tee & PE pants at the upper sec block 4th floor toilet within 4 minutes. This was successfully finished. Immediately after that were the station games organized by Ying Yan and Cher Lin. “Kim’s Game” was located at the mirror board with Mindy and Clara as Station Masters, “Fun Gadget Tying” at HomeEc Area with Deborah and Jia-En, “How Much Do You Know About Your Patrol Mates?” at concourse with Vivien and Xiu Jian, and “Do You Know It All?” at the parade square with Min Li and I as SMs. I don’t know about other stations, but mine for one was a blast! To me and Min Li that is hahaha. This was by far the most fun part of camp, so you can be sure the both of us went a little crazy. What is a sec 1 guides training camp without the testing of some Girl Guide must-knows? That was what my station was about – indispensable Guiding values with just an aftertaste of sweet, sweet physical training and a feathery touch of retarded-ness.

Each person was supposed to run 1 round around the parade square, all the while hollering something funny like “I love TOFU! OMG TOFU ROCKS!” or “I LOVE HWEEFEN AND MINLI! HWEEFEN AND MINLI ROCKS!” (major hint at this point while I was explaining, sorry for not being discreet LOL) etc. Once they were back, they would have to answer 1 question pertaining to the things they have read in the GG Handbook, such as reciting the Promise, naming 1 Guide Law, when to give the Guide Salute and many more. Each correct answer earns them 5 points, and enthusiasm wins them bonus points. Both of us had already agreed on a special move to make during the start of the game, which was this holding-a-gun action whenever I said “Do You Know It All?” I always had a feeling of the black crow flying past whenever we did that, due to the awkward silence as the sec 1s tried to speculate in their minds how to react to us, the pair of bizarre Station Masters. I’d then say, “What, no clapping?” or to the likes of that, in which the sec 1s would obediently follow and I would thereby say “YAY!” and give a chortle. Stupid, I know, but it works! Everyone laughed, I think.

The patrols that came to my station were quite enthusiastic, but they often needed some encouragement. We cheered them on too as each of them ran the 1 round, and almost all the patrols picked up the hint and shouted, or rather, sang that lovely melody which consisted of our names, a prerequisite to bonus points. –Readers gape in disbelief- (Just joking! xD) Some of the sec 1s were not that familiar with the things they have read, so I felt that they could improve on that aspect. The point system was unusual, using a variety of snacks as points. Credit goes to YY and CL!

Cher Lin and Yan Yan were the I/Cs for the next activity, teaching the sec 1s orienteering skills. We went up to 1Responsibility (or 1Righteousness, I forgot which) and the session commenced. The sec 1s were quite attentive and asked questions whenever they were in doubt, which was a good habit to cultivate. However, they did not read the handbook, which caused some inconvenience to the I/Cs as they had to explain from the top.

After that was the PT Game. Sec 1s have to duck walk in 2 straight lines in combined patrols from one end of the lower sec block to the other end, while 1 person from each combined patrol was to run up to the 3rd floor to do 10 push ups before the first to finish was rewarded with a water bomb. They would then run down and rejoin the duck walk. This was mandatory for all sec 1s, and through this game I saw that the sec 1s did cheer for their batch mates and encouraged Alyssa to finish the duck walk, along with the last 2 that ran down. Towards the end, the sec 3s also duck walked behind the sec 1s in an effort to encourage them. When everyone had completed the task, we went to the parade square and had a water bomb fight. During this time though, the sec 1s seemed to have forgotten the very basics of what they were expected to do – take time. They exceeded the time they were given to hydrate themselves, and had no excuse to back them up. We decided not to reprimand them much because we wanted them to have fun, but I feel that it is imperative that we learn to follow instructions even when we are tired, and more so in the midst of having fun. Some sec 3s also joined in the water bomb fight, and it was quite refreshing to play and hear some laughter in the air, even for just a few minutes.
When the water bomb fight ceased, it was time for changing parade and off to the next major activity, which was to learn to tie an emergency shelter. The sec 1s were allocated with a time limit of 4 minutes, where they could use the upper sec block 5th floor toilet to change into their PE tee and school skirt besides drying themselves. I ran up to check on them and ran down with them, so I saw that some of them were walking slowly and even retied their hair when they had most probably exceeded the time given. In the end, they took 7 min 3s in total although they sent 1 person down to ask for time extension. (Supposed to send at least 2 people down by the way)

As the changing parade had already cut into the next activity’s time, Ying Yan and Jia-En were a little worried that they would not have sufficient time. Tying of an emergency shelter was taught at the Old PAC Area, but as I was the I/C for the next activity, I had to leave before it started. It was at that moment where the 3 Great Cs originated from. Deborah, Charlene, Priscilla and I were in charge of PT and block running, which was supposed to be held at the HomeEc Area and HomeEc Block. We decided to change the venue to the staircase area beside the new indoor sports hall and Lee Kuo Chuan indoor stadium after much thought as the field was being used and some of us felt that the HomeEc Area was a little stuffy. True to their worries, Ying Yan and Jia-En’s activity really exceeded the time allocated, so the PT also started late. The sec 1s did about half of the 6 sets of PT, before continuing with the running. Priscilla and I had already gauged the number of times to run up the staircase and around the indoor stadium by doing a pre-run beforehand, so we managed to finish in less than 5 minutes. Through the PT, I could see that they really endured through although some people fell out. In addition, they improved in their stamina and really tried hard, so much so that some even cried. Hence, good job sec 1s! You made it through alive! See, you can do it! XD

Due to time constraints, we pushed campfire songs to after lunch. By now it was lunch time for all of us! 12.30pm to be exact. [OH MY GOSH. I know I’m a windbag, but bear with me, it’s ending soon O.O] I was a little moody during lunch because of the previous activity, so I ate quietly and quickly. The sec 3s had a meeting then, to clarify some matters regarding the last 2 activities. It turned out that most of the sec 3s did not know of the change in venue as the O/ICs had some miscommunication, and before that everyone was already stressed out over the delay during the tying of emergency shelter, thus resulting in a slight confusion and conflict. We admitted that it was an injudicious decision on our part, a peccadillo which didn’t warrant a felony, so everything was cleared up, but it didn’t stop the day from morphing to confusion, to conflict, and then all of a sudden, to crying. GAAAH! In other words, it was just too much for some of us that it resulted in a cascade of tears. In my opinion though, through this and the whole training camp, we really grew closer as a batch.

Well then, I’ll rush through the rest. Teaching of campfire songs, with the aid of the 2 spastic Cs, Clara and Charlene, was a riot. The atmosphere was quite lively and I even got to witness those 2 doing the “Father Abraham had 7 children…” song. Gadget tying seized the day, as we spent a total of 1h 40min in the classrooms tying gadgets! The sec 1s tied square lashes for the first few times before moving on to luggage rack. They didn’t answer the I/Cs and needed a lot of prompting, so this area can be improved on. The I/Cs decided to give 5 minutes for the sec 1s to tie a square lash, taking the opportunity to see who got the most sense of urgency and not take her own sweet time. After that, the O/ICs blew the whistle to fall in. Right here, I have to say this – I will seriously never get used to the whistle. I get the urge to run towards the sound every time I hear the 5 short blasts, which, essentially, is actually a good habit to have in guides. I know many of us do too haha. Ahhh, it was fun to see my fellow sec 3s jumping at the sound and to laugh at their expense with the others. -evil glint muahaha- (no malice intended)

Drills were next. I went to Mindy and Rachel’s side to observe, before going over to Jia-En and Cher Lin, where they were deep in “discussion” with the sec 4s. Needless to say, I joined them as well. Overall, I felt that the sec 1s learnt very fast during drills, and I have to commend that their lines were almost always straight. The day was almost over! The sec 1s did a reflection on day 2, the O/ICs took over and it was time for debrief. The sec 1s did a total of 50 jumping jacks and 50 catch stars as punishment, and the sec 3s did together with them. The time of reckoning has arrived! Prize-giving!!

*Drum roll please* I am proud to announce that Centrioles Patrol got the Most Enthusiastic Patrol award!!! -Overwhelming Applause-

Outstanding Patrol went to Ribosome, Most Initiative Patrol went to Golgi Apparatus and Most Creative Patrol went to Mitochondria. The Best Camper was Jeanne (pronounced by Mindy as JEAN-NA!) and Care Bear was Hui Ling.

All in all, this camp left a deep impression on me, as the very first camp organized and planned by the sec 3s. Towards the sec 1s, I really felt that they have improved tremendously since the start of the camp, and have learnt a few new skills that can be put to good use later on in Guides. Being prepared is the sine qua non of a purposeful Guiding life! They have endured and persevered through to the very end, and I hope they will continue to strive to do their best and give their all in the future! You can do it! I also got to know my camp patrol sec 1s more, so it was really a fruitful camp

As for the sec 3s, I can feel that we’ve forged a closer bond through this camp. Although there was a minor issue, we managed to resolve it and we have gained much experience from this training camp. A very big hi-five to all sec 3s, we did it! Also, KUDOS to the O/ICs – Mindy, Yan Yan, Deborah and Vivien!!! Thanks for all the hard work you put in to making this camp a successful one for all of us. today's activity : Basic Self Defence Course

The basic self defence course today was really fun ! :D and i thought that their theory of warm ups - the run around and hit ppl like crazy game was NICEE ! They should do it for PE lessons sometimes (: hehe. We did loads and learnt loads of stuff today :D such as learning how to distract your "enemy" to get a chance to flee away . This course was really benefitable cus it might help us in future when THINGS happen :D and i enjoyed it cus the instructors were nice and funny and the way they acted out how we should react is really professional ! Overall , it was really fun and quite enjoyable .

i'm looking forward to more of these activities ! :D

We had unit initiative today – Self Defense course.

We gathered at the Tower Hall and had a brief introduction of the course. I thought the main instructor was really scary, because he was so huge and all. But after a few series of the sword game (warm up), I found that he was really hilarious. I really liked the sword game, it was my favorite part of the whole activity. I found it really hilarious and amusing as I went around tapping everyone at the leg. ;D;D;D

The second part was learning about the non confrontational stance. It was really dry but we were having real fun when the instructor told us to pair up and try to keep your partner off balance. My partner was Yee Kay, and it was really interesting when she kept on letting me push her off balance!!

After that, we learnt more about distracting the “enemy”. It was really difficult to learn, since I was not trained to move that way XD but I soon got the hang of it. However, I felt that my reflexes were a bit slow, so when my opponent caught my hand, I waited a little while before reacting. If it was the real thing happening to me, I will definitely work faster in terms of reacting.

The course was overall interesting and really enjoyable. I think we could have learnt more if it was a longer activity (like 2 hours more). I learnt more about self defense and would like to try more of self defense in the future.

Today, marks the very first day of our long awaited March holidays. We here, at the Anglican High Girl Guides Singapore, kicked started ours by attending a fruitful Self-Defense Course; held by professionals from the organization, Samurai Sports Singapore. We were instructed to gather at the iconic Tower Hall, where the course was to be held. To be honest, this had already gotten off on a bad foot for me. I for one, highly dislike the stench of stale sweat and overheated rubber of the assembly area that is oh-so-familiar to all of us here at AHS. Nonetheless, equipped with our 1.5 bottle of hydrating fluid, we ran head on to our given destination. Our instructor was not a stranger to us, as the Secondary 2 2008 batch had already undergone a Chanbara programme last year during our Physical Education periods which was also lead by him. What struck us the most was not his skill or the agility of his legs, but rather his sense of humour that was hardly reciprocated.

I began the course with a heavily expectant heart, hoping to be armed and equipped with skills similiar to those of Lara Croft, or even Kim Possible. However, our instructor, Dave was not joking when he said he would teach us the very basics of self defense. Indeed, the very basics he taught us. He started off with an engaging warm up, where each of us took our guard with a makeshift sword and 'war' broke out between patrols. All in all, it was an ultimate and unique cardio vescular workout that got our adrenaline rushing though our veins to get the day started. Needless to say, I was terribly letdown when he started by teaching us the proper stance when approached by a stranger. Basics. What, no kicks and chops with names too long even to enunciate accurately? My morale took a significant dip, and the day inched slowly along.

As we went through the dogmas of very basic self defense, I was seriously reluctant. In addition, there was hardly any excitement injected into the program. It consisted of some very basic thrusts and feet movement, just enough to suffice for time to flee to a secure area. No, it was obvious as the course progressed that Dave was not here to empower us with fight skills to inflict severe damage on the opponent. I kissed my dreams of delivering a knockout punch or a knuckle sandwich that resulted in a broken nose goodbye. I slothed along, picking up just enough skills to master in hopes that the instructors that were keeping watch at the side would spare me and not select me as a bad example to showcase to the company. From swift feet movement, to easy hand techniques that would come in handy in times of need, it slowly began to dawn on me that this course's main purpose is not to transform me into Wonder Woman, along with the sexy outfit and Magic Lasso; but experience that will save my skin in uncomfortable situations that are very real.

Finally, we were given the opportunity to practice our new found talents with realistic sandbags and punch gloves that we could exercise our techniques on. Moreover, we were also furnished with vocal commands such as 'Back off!' or 'Go away!' that would not only draw attention to the horrendous situation I was caught in and perhaps garner some help of the public but would also provide some shock to the offender; resulting in time gained to make our escapade. The situation that our instructors gave us was a very realistic one; You are walking home from school one day. Perhaps you woke up on the wrong side of bed today, and you decide to take another route. You deem the walk through the quiet park connector as a peaceful one. But all of a sudden, you feel queasy as the middle-aged man approaches you rapidly. With not a soul in sight, what's a 15 year old girl like yourself to do? This is when our new found skills come in excellent usage.

The black punch board materialized into a middle aged 'cheekopek' in his early 50ties, decked out in a translucent white singlet, faded dirt brown bermudas and blue striped slippers; his balding head glistens with sweat and his thighs consists of jiggling rolls of cellulite, and approaches you. I ran towards the punch bag and threw myself towards it, executing with grace and swiftness(hopefully) the triangle tactic that I was taught, albeit too enthusiastic. As I made my way back to the end of the queue, I thought to myself: Hey, so what if this course doesn't make me eligible to join the Totally Spies? At least I'll know what to do when encountered with a sexual pervert with a mentally unsound mind. After all, I highly doubt I'll ever meet hordes of soldiers hot on my heels that require black belt karate to defeat, in pursuit of a Kingdom of the Lost Skull, or what nots.

#8 - ACSI campfire: Epidemic!

I went to the campfire hosted by Anglo Chinese School ( Independent ) and it was very fun. It was also a bit scary as there were zombies lurking around which almost scared me to death... I was almost deafened by the screaming and shouting too. But the seniors were very pretty. :D And they put up a great performance although i didnt know why they never won... As it was raining, we went indoors and could not go outdoors. D: The girl beside me kept on screaming and when i opened my mouth to scream, all that came out was a squeak. Maybe i haven't screamed for too long already.. T.T On the whole, the campfire was very interesting and fun. :D I hope that i can go there again~ :]

The campfire was quite fun though there was no fire at all. The concert peformance was quite ok although some parts were quite boring. I thought the seniors(sec 4)danced really really well although they did not win. I thought that they were the best as they were quite synchronized in their dance movements. Back on the bus the seniors were quite sad as it was their last campfire. The sec 4 will be leaving soon and that's so sad. The sec 4s rock! They are the best sec4s we ever had and will always be.

ACSI's campfire was really fun! Although it was not like what i expected with a fire in the middle,it was really fun. Especially when before we entered the hall, we are suppose to walk through the the stairs where they say that the people inside were infected by an epidemic and turned into zombies. We had lots of fun although it was scary and we screamed all the way through. There was lots of games and activities and all schools were really enthusiastic! The dance performed by the secondary fours from Anglican High was great! Although they did not win, all of us agreed it was the best ! In the bus the secondary fours sang to all songs enthusiastically we could tell they would miss campfires after they leave guides. Overall, this was the best campfire ever but i know in future in guides i would enjoy more fun campfires.

Yesterday was my first campfire, so I was quite excited but on the other hand scared as I was the ONLY sec 2!! Because of the rain earlier on, the campfire was held indoors and I was rather disappointed. Before we entered the hall, we had to pass a long passageway where there were some students dressed as zombies to scare us. Ying jia and some other sec 1 was screaming. After passing the terrifying passageway, we reached the hall. The first performance was a song performance which was quite interesting. Next up was a skit. I think the skit was rather boring because I couldn’t really hear what were they talking about(the audience was VERY noisy). The next item was games; the rule is to make the opponents laugh. This part was boring as well because what they said was only, “ I love you”, if it was me on stage, I would surely say my 秦始皇joke.

Next up was a dance performance put out by some of our seniors!!!! Deborah ma’am is SO pretty!!!!!! I was shouting like nuts, the dance is seriously out of this world. Then it was a continuation of the previous skit (I still can’t figure it out what is the actor saying). The next item was game called, “don’t forget the lyrics”. I thought it was going to be fun but was boring as well because the songs were all so unfamiliar to me.

That the end for the campfire, overall I think the whole campfire was quite boring, we don’t even get to sing campfire song and we didn’t won the dance competition. I expect the campfire to be outdoors next year.

The campfire we experienced at ACSI was a wholenew experience for me because it was the first time we had a campfire without FIRE or candles. However, i believe that every campfire is unique in its own way and the scout/guides that organised them had to put in tremendous amount of effort to make it happen. As a result, i would like to thank every single school that invited us to their campfire.

I have always enjoyed campfires especcially when i was a junior. Being a senior gives me new responsibilities and i have to make sure that our guides are always safe and IN-ONE-PIECE especcially in campfires and the frequent stampedes during the thousand-legged-worm cheer. However, now that it is the last campfire for our batch, i'm starting to feel that all the worrying for juniors is worth it as long as i get to get my buttock on the campfire bench:)

At ACSI, Ahsgg did our first performance at campfires (the batch before us did perform at campfires before but since 2008, this was the first time ahs gg put up a performance). Although it was our first time, it marked a beautiful end to our last campfire.

Our dancers(Deborah, Jasmine, Yijing, Evangelin, Venus and myself) had numerous practise sessions frequently weeks before the campfire and i would like to thank Venus especcially for cheorographing our dance and spending so much time on it:D I would also like to thank the other dancers who stayed back for practises although many a times we were very busy.

On the day of the campfire, dancers came to school early to rehearse our dance. We rehearsed outside grotto and it was raining cats and dogs. Subsequently, we changed into our uniform and waited for the bus to arrive.

13 sec4s, 6sec1s and 1sec2 attended this campfire and of course the ahs falcon scout sent about 10 scouts for this campfire. We shared the bus and reached ACSI shortly. At ACSI, we waited near the gateway while the ACSI Scouts and Ventures did some preparation for the indoor campfire. Due to the heavy rain, the campfire had to be held indoors. Dancers went to one of the classrooms to change and get ready for the performance.

We met the other guides at the auditorium after changing and waited for everyone to be seated. Next, we watched numerous performances that were planned really well and interesting. However, i believe that the microphones werent very clear and most of the skids couldn't be heard clearly. Overall, i feel that the whole ACpedemic theme was awesome and every performance put up (be it the chij toapayoh dancers, hwachong bboys, acsi ventures, acsi scouts or ahsgg) were awesome because it played a part in making our last campfire what it was. Kudos to everyone present at the campfire!

Dancers were backstage awaiting for our turn to perform while we played around with starwars mask, and talked our time away. (by the way, the scout who ate the monkey tied the monkey on his neck while he was backstage. HAHA) Lights dimmed and we went into positions and started our dancing. Mr-monkey-eater poured some red juice on the ground previously in the skid and some of our dancers had to step on the juice. However despite the lack of space and nervousness, i believe that all 6 of us did an awesome job!:D

We enjoyed refreshments and headed back to AHS.

On the bus, sec4s sang our hearts out. Campfire songs. It was the last time we get to sing it that loudly! However, i believe that we would remember these songs and remember all the happy times we spent at campfires. It was a non-stop campfire song karaoke session on the bus and I gave it all out to singing them. Thank you sec4s who did likewise and made a beautiful mark to our last campfire while we sang Canadian Vesper one last time.

Thanks everyone for making my last campfire such a memorable one. Thanks Ms Ng for giving the dancers support and helping me with the booking of bus. Thanks sec4s, we've really made poor bus-driver-uncle deaf on our way to ahs! Thanks jrs for being so cooperative. Thanks scouts for not giving me any major trouble this time:D

#7 - 1st Friday Activity by Sec3o9

Hello (:
Today’s activity was planned by the secondary threes of both Flowerpecker Patrol and Ixora patrol. Needless to say, all of us were looking forward to seeing how it would turn out, this being the first activity we were ever in-charge of. We did not do much in today’s activity, only having to play station games for the most part, with several changing parades in-between.
Everyone was in time for the changing parades today, waited for one another and took time, so all was good.

Since it was drizzling today, we had to undertake the wet weather station games plan instead. There were four station games in total: ‘Kim’s Game’, ‘Honey if you love me’, ‘Can you hear me?’ and ‘Save the Citizens!’ with rather amusing (or blatantly obvious) clues given at each station that leads to the next.
Vivien and I were the station masters for ‘Honey if you love me’ and thus we were not really aware of how the other stations were doing, but feedback from the station masters did give us a vague impression, in which would be elucidated on later.

‘Honey if you love me’ was a rather short and simple game (we really did overestimate its duration) and despite the fact that sometimes it gets a little dull, it did bring about some laughter and smiles (which was the main point), and we did witness many potential actresses in action, which was amusing to no end. It was also really gratifying to see patrol-spirit as well as combined-patrol-spirit (in which one victorious patrol did want to spare the non-victorious one a humiliating forfeit until we told them the forfeit was worth points), and so, really well done. However, if it was unclear, the purpose of this particular station game was to train your perseverance and to learn how to keep in control of your emotions, two things that will come in handy later on.

Although I wasn’t there, I could infer that ‘Kim’s Game’ was rather fun, as usual, and the station masters of this station was Cherlin and Charlene. Heard their Indian accent was side-splittingly hilarious, wish I was there to see. According to feedback, it was good to hear that the secondary threes were really eager, though the secondary ones and twos could do well to display more keenness, but all in all the station masters did a really good job, and the rest did work well together. Also, this station aims to improve one’s senses, concentration and memory, so I hope that many did benefit from this.

Next was the ‘Can you hear me?’ station, with Ying Yan and Min Li as the two station masters. As all knows, that kind of spells trouble. (Also, heard that their Thai accent was funny beyond belief.) Those two also came up with innovative ideas to add amusement to their station, by making hapless blindfolded guides sing songs and stuff, so here’s a pat on the back. It was also nice to hear that many guides did display enthusiasm, even having lost one’s sight, and this game did fulfil its task of training our alertness and boost our trust with one another, and it’s great that many enjoyed themselves thoroughly.

Finally, it would be the ‘Save the Citizens!’, where the station masters are Priscilla and Rachel, with their renowned Italian accent (which I do not know how it sounds like, so it must be a feat to speak with one). This station also achieved the goal of reinforcing our skills learnt in guides, in this case gadget tying, and the secondary ones did get to understand much more about this important guides skill, and to realise that gadget tying is more than mere knots and poles, but a vital skill that can build structures of novelty and convenience. Many of the patrols also tried hard to come up with interesting ideas to decorate the structures, something commendable.

After the station games, there was the prize giving ceremony, where all the patrols were awarded for all their effort put in, so congratulations to all patrols. (: Also, us secondary threes had two more times changing parade, where we thankfully made it in time.

All in all, I did thoroughly enjoy today’s activity, as well as planning it with all the other O/ICs, and without cooperation from the rest of the secondary 3s and participation from the rest of the guides, it would not have been half as fun as it was today. (:

The sequence of the games are according to the order Dove and Hibiscus (combined patrol) played (:

The first game was the one at the church car park. We were blindfolded and had to taste, feel and smell the objects given to us. It was quite fun and interesting as we did not know of what to expect.

The second game was the one behind grotto. We were to tie the gadget poles onto tripod poles in a creative way. Teamwork was required for this game(:
The third game was in 1Perseverance. We were to pair up within our patrols. We were to choose a song and sing it while our partner (blindfolded) makes her way through the obstacle course. It was quite enjoyable.

The last game was in the concourse. We were divided into our individual patrols. We were to make the opponent smile or grin with the lines given. It was hilarious, seeing people trying to hide their smile (:

On 13th March, we played games for guides activity. It was in combined patrol. There are different names called for each station. The first one that my patrol went was to be blind folded and guess the item that we felt or tasted. It was quite fun as the items were remained a mystery to us. The next station was something to do with gadget tying. I think that it is a good way to practice gadget tying that way, in a form of game. Though it is still gadget tying, but the mood that we used to tie the gadgets are different. The third station is in a classroom. One partner was blindfolded while the other partner had to sing a song. It was quite fun as the stations mistresses were super high. The last station was to make the person from the other patrol to smile. Though I played that game quite a number of times, it was different playing with guides.

Overall, I enjoyed myself very much. I feel that the sec 3s planned the activity well. Also, the station mistresses were very well- prepared. They were also very enthusiastic. I feel that there should be more stations. Maybe there should be one on physical training, like running etc. However, I get to know more of the sec 1s from the other patrol better, which is a good thing. I hope there is another combined patrol activity.

I think that Friday's activity was rather fun as there was station games. There were four stations in total and they were all really, really fun!!:D At the end of all games, there was a prize presentation and my patrol, hibiscus, had won the first prize! and the prize was a bottle of water...Haha...:D there was also a changing parade and the sec2s and 3s had to change from their guides uniform to their guides tee. They were very fast! Wow, not an easy task!

Anyway, i had a great day in guides and i had no regrets joining guides. I look forward to more games and fun drills!(:

Hello everyone, drills today was great. All the sec1s knew to march and were taught how to form contingents. 5 new commands were introduced and although sec1s haven't perfected them, they showed significant improvement in their initiative and attitude. With that, you girls deserve a big big CLAP:D Keep it up and we believe that you guys will be an awesome batch!

Firstly, sec ones learnt the basics of gadget tying, like the clove hitch, square lash and frapping
We had to tie two poles together within 3 minutes and untie everything in 30 seconds.
And we kept to the time limit most of the time so we didn't have to do any punishment :)
Then, the ICs taught us how to tie the gadget poles into bundles of 10
We have to create an 'S' shape with the twine first, then tie it all up.

Next, we were taught campfire songs like Linger, Canadian Vesper, etc.
We then had to split into the first four patrols and the last four patrols in order to get that enthu spirit up and awake!!
It was super duper fun!!

Then, since it was still early, we had games like Hunter, Fire, Earthquake, Elope, the $1 coin game, etc.
During the coin game, we were supposed to make the person guessing where the coin was think that we were holding the coin when we didn't.
One forfeit was to write guides with the, ahem, butt.
It was hilarious

Today's Act for Sec1s:
We learned Gadget tying, using the twines we've brought.
Its interesting, as it was my first experience, but yet confusing. It took everyone quite a long time to get the steps right, for the ma'ams and ICs came to us individually and taught us. In the end, we managed to tie the poles together quite well.

After practicing and practicing, we were given a time limit to tie and untie the knot, it was rather challenging, as we need to do it within 3 minutes and 30 seconds respectively.

After the tyings, we were taught to sing the campfire songs. For some of us are going for the campfire at ACS(I) next Saturday, we have to know some of the commonly sung songs.
At the start, everyone was soft. But after singing a few songs, we became more enthusiastic as the first 4 patrols and the last 4 patrols started to compete with each other on who can sing louder. Venus ma'am praised us that we are fast learners :D

Next we went to the concourse for games.
We played 'Splat', 'Fire, Hunter, Earthquake' and coin passing games.
We were quite familiar with the Splat game, as we've played it before.
I was confuse at the 2nd game for i'm not sure what to run for and what to stay. So in the end i was the first to get kicked.
Everyone sang along the coin song enthusiastically as we passed the $1 coin around.

So that was about the end.
I enjoyed myself thoroughly, and i bet every sec 1s does :D

On Friday, 6th March 2009, the sec 2s had gadget-tying. Personally, I found it exceptionally enjoyable. We went to 1 Perseverance and did gadget-tying. We tied the square leash for a total of nine times. The first round, we were asked to tie a 48” pole to a 24” pole. The number of 48” poles that we needed to tie depended on the number of people in that particular patrol. The next eight rounds were all individual.

Unfortunately, we were not on time for the first seven rounds of tying the square leash. We were 17 seconds late for the first round, 19 seconds late for the second round, 4 seconds late for the third and fourth round(as the ma’ams gave us 2min 15sec), 14 seconds late for the fifth, 10 seconds late for the sixth, and 15 seconds late for the seventh round.

Even with that much time, a few of us could not complete the knot in the given time.

Finally, at the eighth round, we finally managed to complete in 2mins. I was elated, but then realised that there were still two people who did not finish it in time due to some reasons. At the last round, the ninth round, the ma’ams gave us as much time as we needed to tie the square leash, and it needed to be standard.

Overall, I think that Friday’s gadget-tying was not very good, but we might have improved a little, and that we could improve a lot more.

After gadget-tying, we proceeded to 1 Holiness to learn more about orienteering. We revised on how to find true north, the parts of a compass, grid reference, and learned about bearings.

I felt that the revision on orienteering cleared many of our doubts on the parts of the compass and mostly bearings.

After we had completed revising on orienteering, we had dialogue session.

Overall, I felt that Friday’s activity was very good as we managed to learn more about orienteering and improved a little in gadget-tying.

We falled-in at 1.30pm with anxiety over what today’s activity was going to be about. Many Secondary 3 Guides were late as their teachers had held them back. We then went behind Grotto to learn how to set up a campfire. It was rather interesting as many things were new to us and we didn’t actually know what happened behind closed doors like the soaking of firewood in kerosene and bundling the cobhouse together with a metal wire. It was a new experience for us.

Then, it was Physical Training but not the normal sets we always do. We had to run 20 Suicides which was an incredible feat for most of us as our staminas had decreased greatly. Nevertheless, we all completed the 20 Suicides. Each of us picked a spouse/wooden pole. Our first thought was that we were going to build a mini structure. However, we had to do Physical Training with it. The pole was quite heavy and was about our heights. We were told to hold the log above our heads while every guide ran 2 rounds. It was very tiring as we were already out of breath by the time we finished the 2 rounds. Most of us didn’t do the standard way and it was quite demoralizing.
After putting back the poles, we proceeded to do a flagpole. Choosing of the poles was moderate and we gained more experience in choosing the appropriate poles for the various roles in the flagpole. Halfway through the time limit given which was 20minutes, the 1st 4 patrols group realized that we were short of a lashing. Therefore, we had to bring the whole structure down and redo the lashings on the erecting pole. In the end, we took 40 minutes which was twice the time limit given while the 2nd 4 patrols took 22minutes. We felt very guilty for increasing the punishment. We could have done much better if we did not do things sloppily and slowly. 60 Jumping Jacks was then carried out as a punishment. Secondary 3 Guides then falled-in with the rest of the company and was dismissed.
Overall, I feel that our batch could have done better in today’s activity and we did not put in our utmost best.

#4 - Drills

Sec1s drills were average. Sadly, there was a slight drop in your performance. We feel that sec1s could be more proactive and take more initiative in counting your mistakes and stepping out to do the punishments accordingly without waiting for us to prompt. Secondly, we also feel that there is a constant problem about not locking your arms and fidgeting during drills. We hope that after the session, everyone can learn from the mistakes and do better in the next session.

Putting the negative aspects aside, we also feel that it was impressive that the sec1s that learnt how to march did very well in marching. Marching in a contingent was also impressive and the overall performance during marching was awesome for a first-timer. We hope that everyone can keep up the good work and constantly improve! Keep going sec1s! You can do it:D

#3 - Thinking Day o9 excursion to Hort Park

Today we had combined excursion with scouts!=)
We went to Hort Park! For the first part, we played games in the Park. It was quite fun!!!

Then we went for a short hike. It was around 4km.
We hiked from Hort Park to Vivo City...
For the hike we walked on a bridge, something like a tree top walk.
Some of them were scared as they were afraid of heights.
But the scenery from up there was nice!
After the hike ended, we sat at a grass patch and ate the snacks.
They announced the results for the games too.

On the way back to school, most of the guides slept in the bus...

And yupp dats all for our excursion. ^^

Heys! It’s thinking day! GIRL GUIDES and SCOUTS had a combined activity at HARBOURFRONT ;D

We started at hortpark which we played our station games ;DDD
The first station game was BUNDLES of JOYY!!
Basically you have to go through a series of events tied up together AS A PATROL!! ( with scouts )
Yays!
The station masters were Hwee Feeee(n) and Jeremy or!

The second station game was BODY ENGLISH!
The guides and scouts were given two close passage each. Then one representative from both guides and scouts from each COMBINED patrol were pulled out.
The other members of the combined patrol will then thus fill in the blanks and have to use their ‘body’ to act out the word and the representative will have to guess the word ;DD
So cool!
The station masters were Mandy and Menghowe

The third station game was GUESS THE NAME!
Well. the game is just about how fast and accurate u can shout the persons name.
A groundsheet was placed in between the two combined patrol ;D
Then they will send a representative to the front of the ground sheet. The ground sheet will drop and the person who shouts the opponents FULL name the fastest and most accurate is the WINNER!!;D
The station masters were Clara and Qi Wen

The FINAL station was the BALLOONS station ;D
It’s the COOLEST station of all! ;D
Well firstly each member of the combined patrol were given TWO balloons and TWO rubber bands each. Then they will have to tie it to their leg and the objective of the game was to BURST the opponents balloons ;D
Of course, it wasn’t just so simple!
Teams will have to link their arms together to form a circle :D and together as one, they will then attack the opponents balloons ;D
This games promotes bonding between the members ;D
The station masters were Charlene and Dave ;D

After the games, we had a short hike from HORTPARK to VIVOCITY ;D
It was a 4km hike up to MOUNT FABOUR and back down to the HARBOURFRONT mrt station ;D
Leading the hike was Charlene and Dave, in the middle was Hwee Fen and Jeremy Or, at the back was Menghowe and Mandy.
The first landmark we passed by was the Alexandra arch. It is the BIGGEST arch in Singapore ;D
It was beautifully shaped polished with a fresh coat of white paint ;D
Next up, was forest walk. It was a raised platform up to the canopies of the forest made of solely metal to prevent the ‘friendly residents’ of the forest from eating away the path ;D the platform was pretty high up so some of our fellow guides got scared ;D but not to worry the platform is very safe. Although the opening of the platform was delayed.
Moving on, we had a short toilet break and we arrived at Henderson waves. The view was spectacular. It was a bridge with a very unique design that looks like waves with are actually shelter for passer-bys to take a break ;D
We had our company photo there ;D as the view was the best and it was spacious enough.
Next up, we walked the HILLTOP walk with is just basically walking up a hill, Mount Fabar, it was a short trip up although quite tiring ;D
Lastly, the last walk was the MARANG TRAIL.
The last trail was quite dangerous as the roads were not properly made as this last trial is just a short walk with nature.

FINALLY, the day ended with a short patrol interaction and a prize ceremony ;D
The points were awarded to the patrols during the games.
In third place, there was a tie between orchid and sparrow
In second place, it was dove
In first place, it was flowerpecker

After the prize presentation, we headed back to school and was dismissed ;D
It was indeed a tiring but fun day ;D and I hoped everyone enjoyed themselves as much as I did ;D
I also hoped the seniors really enjoyed their last thinking day together with the AHS company. Have a good day ;D

Today we had drill session and Venus, Priscilla and myself took the sec1s for drills. What we have to say to the sec1s is...

GREAT JOB SEC1s, YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN CONSTANTLY IMPROVING AND IMPROVING AND IMPROVING! Individual drills was good, we could see you all putting in effort to correct your postures and stuff:D Soon enough, you'll be learning how to march so do keep it up and keeeeeep improving!:D REMEMBER 90DEGREES, POINT DOWN AND SOLID BANG OKAY!

Short session of dialogue about drills was fine. Everyone was sure of areas that the/thebatch can improve on. Its good to hear feedback from you girls and yes BOND OKAY:D We also noticed that there are a couple of girls who are good in drills so DO KEEP IT UP AND HELP THE REST TO IMPROVE TOO:D

Hey hey hey, it’s thinking day (x3)
In Singapore, it’s thinking day.
And in a place called AH girl guides, its thinking day!!!!!!!!!

Once again, happy thinking day my dear fellow guides!!:D

So yesterday was thinking day rally at the Indoor stadium. And sadly, the last for us sec 4s. The last time for us to sing campfire songs with guides all around S’pore, the last time for us sing ‘we are the brownies!!! We will be guides soon!!!’

HEY!!! I just realized we didn’t sing that song yesterday!!!! Anyway, enough with all the emotional talk. To cut a long story short, we got PNA GOLD!!! Well done guides, sec 4s especially. If not for your hard work and co-operation, we would have not have even attained this award. We have proven to people that we can do it no matter how others think that it is impossible for us to fulfill the goals our previous seniors set for us. And to the juniors, remember the joy on your seniors faces as we received this award yesterday. We hope that you too, will have that smile swept across your face next year. It’s not hard to attain what you want, with hard work and tenacity, you can attain much. So with this, I end of with a quote by Norman Vincent Peale: ‘If you want to get somewhere, you have to know where you want to go and how to get there. Then never, never give up.’ You can do it guides!!!!

PS: We have been invited to Anderson Campfire in June. So future logistics, it is going to be your first job!!! *smiley face*
